Sangai festival helps promote indigenous sports in Manipur

Manipur, Dec 17 (ANI): Polo, locally known as sagol-kangjei, is believed to have been originated in Manipur. Today a top favorite sport, Polo is preserved by many clubs in Manipur and across the world, who enthusiastically come to participate at the annual Sangai festival. Players from India, Poland, Thailand, United States, South Africa, England, Mongolia and France participated in the 8th edition of Manipur Polo International 2014 held at Mapal Kangjeibung. The international event was organized by Manipur Horse Riding and Polo Association. A number of other indigenous games organized at the Polo Ground as a part of the Sangai festival attracted large number of visitors. The traditional Mukna Kangjei or Wrestling Hockey, which enjoyed the royal patronage in the past, is regaining popularity in the state. Many other indigenous sports like Thang-ta, Yubi Lakpi and Mukna were also organized during the Sangai festival. Dec 17, 2014

Bhubaneshwar, Dec 15 (ANI): Olympic champions Germany proved too strong for Pakistan in hockey's Champions Trophy final. Goals from Christopher Wesley in the 18th minute and Florian Fuchs three minutes from time were enough to give Germany a superb 2-0 victory over Pakistan, with a sell-out crowd witnessed the Germans claim their 10th Champions Trophy Gold medal but their first since 2007. The Bronze medal contest between Australia and India ended in another medal for the World Cup winners, who overcame the host nation to take a 2-1 win. Eddie Ockenden silenced the crowd with a field goal in the 18th minute.India got back on level terms from a penalty corner on 42 minutes, Lalit Upadhyay eventually putting the ball in the back of the net. No FIH matches in India till Pak players are punished, says Hockey India

New Delhi/ Bhubaneswar, Dec 14 (ANI): Hockey India taking strong action against Pakistani players who made obscene gestures after winning semi-final match of Champions Trophy against India in Odisha, on Sunday, decided that it would not host any event sanctioned by the world body until strong punishment is handed out to the offenders. Pakistan beat India 4-3 in a thrilling match in Bhubaneswar city on Saturday. After the win, players of Pakistani team took off their t-shirts and made lewd gestures at the crowd. The unruly behaviour was condemned by all and Pakistani head coach Shahnaz Sheikh apologised for team’s behaviour, following which the International Hockey Federation (FIH) refused to take any action in the matter. New Delhi, Dec 14 (ANI): Politicos condemned Pakistan hockey team for disgracing the game as they made obscene gestures towards Indian fans and media after their win over India. Soon after their 4-3 win, Pakistani players went into a frenzy mode and started celebrating their victory in a wild fashion. BJP leader Kirti Azad said that this was a shame and the International Hockey Federation should take action over the same. NCP leader Majid Memon said that Pakistan players should maintain patience as the same is giving a wrong message to public. JD (U) leader Ali Anwar termed them as undisciplined.
