Security forces on high alert to ensure peaceful elections in the Northeast

Assam/ Tripura/ Mamipur, April 05 (ANI): With barely a fortnight remaining for voting to begin for the general elections, elaborate security measures have been put in place all over the country. In the Northeast, the security forces are on high alert to prevent any attempt by insurgent outfits to disrupt the democratic process. The region has a past experience of poll boycotts by underground outfits, and incidents of threats and extortions against candidates. In Assam, security has been tightened in sensitive areas, as outfits like NDFB (S) are threatening candidates and demanding money. In Tripura, around 20,000 security personnel, including 15,000 state police and Tripura State Rifles jawans, would be deployed to maintain law and order during the elections. Apr 5, 2014

Militant hideout busted in J&K, cache of arms & ammunitions recovered

Baramulla, March 30 (ANI): Paramilitary forces on Sunday busted a militant’s hideout in Baramulla district of Jammu and Kashmir ahead of upcoming general election. A huge cache of arms and ammunitions were recovered from the hideout during a joint operation by Rashtriya Rifles and Police in Tangmula forest of Baramulla district. Following this the security had been beefed up in the valley. The restive region has witnessed numerous militant attacks, insurgency, and infiltration attempts from across the border in the last two decades. This is the third hideout busted by security forces in the past one week after two militant hideouts were busted in Bandipora district of Kashmir. Mar 30, 2014

Militant arrest foils terror attack plan in UP

Lucknow, March 28 (ANI): Uttar Pradesh Police arrested militants in Lucknow and revealed that the arrested militants had plans to target and destroy crucial places in an armed attack. Inspector general of police of Uttar Pradesh, Amrender Singh Senger, revealed that the arrested militants were targeting to launch an attack using AK-47 and pistols in a crucial location in the state. The Inspector General added that the captured militants, Abdul Waleed and Salim were trained by Taliban in Afghanistan. Police destroy Maoist camp, seize arms and ammunitions in Odisha

Gajapati, March 21 (ANI): Following tip offs from rebels under police custody, the police in Gajapati district of Odisha destroyed a Maoist camp and seized a huge cache of arms, ammunitions and explosives. The police initiated a raid in Maoist hideouts in the forests of Salimagochha and Therubadi in Gajapati district after receiving primary information from three female Maoists under custody, Nikita, Anita and Susan who were arrested from a camp on February 28. Kashmir: Soldier shoots dead 5 colleagues, kills self

Ganderbal, Feb 27 (ANI): An army jawan of 13 Rashtriya Rifles shot dead five of his colleagues at point blank range when they were sleeping and killed himself in Kashmir's Ganderbal district Thursday morning, said army official. The deaths of the jawans took place inside the army camp of 13 Rashtriya Rifles at Safapora. An army court of inquiry will investigate the deaths. According to sources, the soldier, who was posted on sentry duty at the camp, entered one of the barracks at around 2:00am and opened indiscriminate firing on his sleeping colleagues. Feb 27, 2014

Kupwara, Feb 26 (ANI): Indian Army recovered large quantities of arms and ammunition from seven militants who were killed during an encounter between the Indian Army and militants in forest area of Kashmir. Security has been beefed up as more militants are believed to be hiding in the forest area. Major General, General Officer Commanding (GOC) Kilo Force, SK Saini said that seven AK series weapons were recovered. On specific information, 18 Rashtriya Rifles and Special Operation Group of Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a cordon and search operation in Dardpora forests of Lolab, Saini added. Huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered from Maoist hotbed

Giridih, Feb 23 (ANI): Police busted a Maoist operation in red corridor of Giridih district in Jharkhand and recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition. The district police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) launched a special joint operation from February 18 to February 22 to look out for any Maoist activity in the nearby hills. The team raided a bunker of the Maoists located over the area’s highest hill, forcing the latter to flee from the spot. Police seized 200 detonators, rifles, material used to make bombs, four belts, six uniforms, axes to cut through iron, tear gas grenades, Chinese grenades and a drill machine. Feb 23, 2014
