China is embroiled in multiple territorial disputes with its neighbours both over land sea. The country contests ownership of islands in the South China Sea against Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Brunei, and Vietnam. There is also a long-running fued between China and Japan over Senkaku/ Diaoyu Islands in the East China Sea. North Korea, who are banned from firing ballistic missiles by the UN, launched the missile from a submarine in the Sea of Japan off Sinpo, South Hamgyong Province. The launch comes after threats which have intensified due to South Korea and the US beginning joint military exercises in the region.
