DA case: Jayalalithaa likely to move SC on bail plea

New Delhi, Oct 8 (ANI): Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa and three other accused in an 18-year-old Rs. 66 crore disproportionate assets case, are likely to move the Supreme Court on Wednesday, challenging the Karnataka High Court's order to refuse bail to them. The Karnataka High Court rejected the bail pleas of the four accused on Tuesday, observing that corruption amounts to a violation of human rights. The judge quoted various cases of the Supreme Court under Prevention of Corruption Act and pronounced that there is no ground for giving bail to the accused convicts in this case. The court not only refused to grant of bail, but also declined to stay the sentence of four-year imprisonment and Rs 100 crore penalty imposed on her in the case. Oct 8, 2014

Chennai, Oct 07 (ANI): The Karnataka High Court on Tuesday rejected former Tamil Nadu chief minister J. Jayalalithaa bail plea in connection with an 18-year-old disproportionate assets case, days after a trial court had sent her to four-years in prison. Earlier it was reported by various media that she had been given conditional bail based on the comment by the public prosecutor that he would not be opposed to it. In the morning, the Karnataka High Court had rejected advocate Ram Jethmalani's request for an early hearing of Jayalalithaa's bail plea, saying the hearing would take place according to the number allotted to the case. In Chennai, AIADMK ministers and legislatures have been protesting every day in various ways to show their displeasure over former chief's arrest. AIADMK councilor, MM Babu said prayers and the wishes of the down trodden of the society will help Jayalalithaa's release.
