Imphal, Oct 18 (ANI): Tribes living in the hills and plains of northeastern India come together to participate and compete in Hiyang Hiren Tanana, the traditional boat race competition, held annually two days ahead of the Mera Houchongba celebrations, a festival which encourages brotherhood among tribal communities. On Wednesday hundreds of locals dressed in their traditional northeast Indian attire, came to participate in the festivities of an annual boat race competition which is organised annually two days ahead of the religious festival, Mera Houchongba. All 36 rowers or volunteers which include two team leaders (Tengmai Lappa) who took part in the boat race were blessed by the titular king ofIndia's northeastern Manipur state, Leishemba Sanajaoba, during a ceremony held at Sana Konung (Manipur Royal Palace) on Tuesday. Hiyang HirenTanana (Traditional Boat Race) and Mera Houchongba are the two most important festivals of Manipur which bind the people of the valley with the hills. It happens: Goat feeds a Tiger Cub

Indore, Oct 18 (ANI): A goat has been tending and feeding a tiger cub disowned by its own mother, a tigress at a zoo in Indore district of India's central Madhya Pradesh state. Born a couple of weeks ago, the tiger cub, along with its two siblings, was attacked by its mother at birth. The attack killed the other two siblings and the third one was left paralysed in its lower limbs and spinal cord. Worried for the cub's growth, the zoo authorities arranged for a goat that is feeding the cub and treats the cub like one of its own kind. A bigger challenge that the authorities face now is the treatment of the cub. Yadav said that they were inspecting the spinal cord injuries of the cub and would treat the cub. The zoo authorities observed a change in the behavior of the tigress since the time the cubs were born. It became more violent and refused to feed her cubs. Oct 18, 2013

Coal scam: CBI names KM Birla, ex-Coal Secretary in fresh FIR

New Delhi, Oct 15 (ANI): In another high profile chargesheet in the coal scam, the CBI has registered a case against Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, KM Birla. Aluminum maker Hindalco, which Mr Birla promotes, has also been named in the fresh FIR filed by the agency. According to reports, the FIR names Birla, Nalco, Hindalco and former coal secretary PC Parekh. The charges in the FIR reportedly pertain to alleged forgery and financial misrepresentation. The investigating agency is conducting raids at the Hyderabad, Mumbai and Kolkata offices of Hindalco. The CBI is under pressure from the Supreme Court to hasten its investigation into how and why coal fields were allocated to private players without a transparent bidding process. Oct 15, 2013

Rains and winds lashed India's east coast, forcing nearly five hundred thousand people to flee to storm shelters as one of the country's largest cyclones closed in, threatening to cut a wide swath of devastation through farmland and fishing hamlets. Citing the weather department's warning of extensive damage to mud houses, he said that major disruption of power and communication lines may be caused. It happens: Sikh Guru Birth Anniversary

Amritsar, Oct 11 (ANI): Devout Sikhs hailed the birth anniversary of fourth Sikh Guru, named Guru Ramdas across India on Wednesday. They chanted hymns in his praise while the illuminated Harmandir Sahib better known as Golden Temple at Amritsar in northern state of Punjab presented a grand spectacle. Hundreds gathered at this prominent Sikh temple to offer prayers on this auspicious day. Guru Ramdas is the fourth spiritual leaders of the Sikhs and he is believed to be the founder of the city of Amritsar. The Sikh religion originated with Guru Nanak (1469-1539 AD) who was succeeded by nine other prophets, Guru Gobind Singh (1666-1708 AD) being the last. Followers of Sikhism are identified by five visible symbols namely Cachucha (underwear), Kasha (uncut hair), Kanga (comb), Kara (iron bangles) and Kiran (dagger).
