Harrowing time for commuters as buses in Chennai go on strike

Chennai, Dec 28 (ANI): People in Tamil Nadu had a harrowing time as majority of buses went off roads after employees of Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) went on strike on Sunday (December 28). The employees lamented the state government has failed to take care of employees' welfare and they sat on indefinite strike to press for their demands. TNSTC employees are seeking wage revision and also want the jobs of 20,000 temporary employees to be regularised. The strike was supposed to commence from Monday (December 29) but began a day earlier after the salary of the labourers who were absent from work was not given to them. Adding more to the worry of the state residents, private vans and auto rickshaws were seen charging 10 times more than the usual fare. Close to 1,20,000 workers went on strike from Sunday. Six die as cold wave tightens grip in India

Saharsa, Dec 27 (ANI): At least six people have died in Bihar due to extreme cold wave conditions, officials have confirmed. All the deaths were reported from Saharsa district in the state. Intense cold wave conditions continued unabated across India with mercury touching new lows. Saharsa district magistrate, Shashi Bhushan, said a probe has been ordered into the deaths. The cold has inconvenienced locals on the streets as they struggle to find means to keep themselves warm, often burning scraps of rubbish to create a bonfire. Soma, the mother of the deceased, said they rushed him to a local hospital after he felt uneasy, but could not survive. The sudden dip in temperatures is said to have been caused by snowfall in the Himalayas and has adversely impacted the upper half of the country. Minimum temperatures have even dropped to sub-zero levels in higher altitudes in northern state of Jammu and Kashmir. Dec 27, 2014
