Former Pakistani President Musharraf pleads not guilty to treason

Rawalpindi/ Islamabad, Mar 31 (ANI): A court in Pakistan indicted former president Pervez Musharraf for treason on charges relating to his 2007 imposition of emergency -- a crime that carries the death penalty or life imprisonment. The former military ruler pleaded not guilty to five counts of treason on Monday. Musharraf is accused of unlawfully suspending the constitution and instituting emergency rule in 2007, when he was trying to extend his rule as president. Judge Faisal Arab, who heads the special panel of three judges, rejected a defence plea for additional time. Musharraf, who was President from 2001 to 2008, is the first Pakistani army chief to face such a prosecution. Mar 31, 2014

Karachi, March 31 (ANI): Dozens of supporters of former president of Pakistan, Pervez Musharraf staged protest in Karachi demanding his release to visit his sick mother in Sharjah hospital a day ahead of his appearance in a court in treason case. 95-year-old Zarin Musharraf, mother of the former military ruler, was admitted to the WW Wilson Hospital in Sharjah on Saturday. Musharraf has been summoned to a Special Court set up to try him in a treason case for imposing emergency in the country in 2007. The photo mosaic was adapted from a painting created by ace painter, Viveek Sharma, titled 'Eye of the Tiger', which draws parallel between the tiger and the iconic batsman for his strength and valiant acts of courage, bravery and precision. The original painting by Sharma, which illustrates Tendulkar is akin to the 'King of the Jungle' and the ruler of the Earth, was also unveiled at the event. Meanwhile, Tendulkar also thanked his fans for immense support. Sachin left the game after playing more Test matches (200), scoring the most test (15,921) and one-day international (18,426) runs, and compiling more test (51) and one-day (49) hundreds than any other player in cricket history.
