People light over one lakh earthen lamps, pray for world peace

Gorakhpur, Oct 25 (ANI): Scores of Hindu devotees gathered at a river bank in Uttar Pradesh to light over one lakh earthen oil lamps and prayed for world peace and prosperity of citizens. The lighting of earthen lamps was done after Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. Devotees congregated at the Surajkund temple in Gorakhpur and prayed for brotherhood among people. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Rama, was believed to have rested at this temple site with his consort Sita on their way back from Lanka after defeating Ravana. The temple was illuminated with lights as earthen lamps were placed on the steps. It is a century old custom, organized with the aim to purify the atmosphere and keep the surroundings clean. Despite the Chinese lights flooding the markets, many said they still prefer the ritual of lighting diyas on the auspicious day. Residents of central Raipur thronged markets to complete their Diwali shopping. Diwali marks the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after he defeated the demon king Ravan in Lanka. Bhubaneswar, Oct 22 (ANI): Home for mentally-ill women organised a programme on the eve of Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, in Odisha. The home, 'Mission Ashra', or Mission Shelter, organized a cultural programme for the inmates in Bhubaneswar city, who have been abandoned by their families as they are mentally-ill. Women danced and burst crackers to celebrate the festival. The home houses almost 200 mentally-ill destitute women and works for their treatment and rehabilitation. It has been rescuing helpless women from streets and other places across the 15 districts in the country. Diwali is celebrated with great fervour and gaiety all over India as it marks the return of Hindu god Lord Rama to Ayodhya in northern India after he defeated Ravana, the powerful demon king of Lanka. Surat, Oct 20 (ANI): In an extraordinary show of appreciation, a diamond merchant in Gujarat gifted cars and jewellery as bonus to his 491 employees ahead of the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali. The merchant and owner of diamond export company Hari Krishna Exports Private Ltd., Savjibhai Dholakiya, said that his employees had worked hard and performed well and deserved the bonus. In addition to the cars, around 200 employees were gifted houses and around 500 were presented with jewellery. The employees, in their turn were deeply touched with this gesture of their employer.
