Security forces on high alert to ensure peaceful elections in the Northeast

Assam/ Tripura/ Mamipur, April 05 (ANI): With barely a fortnight remaining for voting to begin for the general elections, elaborate security measures have been put in place all over the country. In the Northeast, the security forces are on high alert to prevent any attempt by insurgent outfits to disrupt the democratic process. The region has a past experience of poll boycotts by underground outfits, and incidents of threats and extortions against candidates. In Assam, security has been tightened in sensitive areas, as outfits like NDFB (S) are threatening candidates and demanding money. In Tripura, around 20,000 security personnel, including 15,000 state police and Tripura State Rifles jawans, would be deployed to maintain law and order during the elections. Apr 5, 2014

Imphal, March 30 (ANI): All together 30 trainees are undergoing a one-month residential artisans' training programme on bamboo handicraft and furniture at the Naoremthong Laishram Khulem Leikai Community Hall in Imphal. The training programme is organized jointly by the Cane and Bamboo Technology Centre, Burnihat Assam and Lifeline Development Organisation and State Bamboo Mission, Manipur. The objective is to make the youth self-reliant and provide them a source of income. Tripura, March 07 (ANI): A Bangladesh team led by Md Abdul Mannan, Director General of Bangladesh’s Department of Land Records and Survey, was in India to carry out a joint border survey with their Indian counterparts. The Indian team was led by the Director of the Survey of India, NR Biswal. They surveyed some 200 kms of the international boundary, including few disputed points like Kamalasagar, Kaiyerdhepha and Akhaura land port areas, and also finalised the location of the new subsidiary border pillars. The teams had earlier visited a few spots in Sylhet District of Bangladesh. India shares a 4,096 km long border with Bangladesh, the longest boundary it has with any of its neighbors. Mar 7, 2014

Agartala, Feb 21 (ANI): India, Bangladesh officials demarcated the disputed border in Tripura after four days of meticulous work and expressed satisfaction. The teams from both the countries visited the bordering areas of Kashba, Kaiyardepha and Akhaura and located 250 new subsidiary border pillars, which have been newly constructed. The demarcation would help guards in manning the border, expedite various construction activities such as fencing and lighting and making of water pump houses. Director General of Bangladesh Department of Land Record and Survey (DLRS), Mohammed Abdul Mannan, said that his team had carried out the mandate given by two governments. During the event, students from different schools presented spectacular cultural programmes. Agartala, Jan 24 (ANI): Tripura recently hosted the 15-day-long National Handloom Expo at the Purbasha grounds in Agartala with an aim to encourage the handloom industry. The annual event is organized jointly by the Development Commission for handlooms, under the Ministry of Textiles and the Department of handlooms, handicraft and sericulture of the Government of Tripura. All together 60 stalls from 14 states and one from neighbouring Bangladesh were put up, showcasing the amazing handiworks of weavers and craftsmen.
