PM Modi meets govt officials on 'smart city' initiative

New Delhi, Dec 30 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with government officials on Smart City initiative in New Delhi. Modi has a vision to create 100 new "smart cities" by 2020, and to make that a reality foreign capital is likely to play a part. One of the aims of this initiative is to improve the quality of urban governance, which will strengthen the overall governance of the county. While inviting identifying factors that could be laid down for building smart cities, Modi asked the government officials to identify the basics of infrastructure, quality of life, and citizen-centric services that are essential to the cities of 21st century. Modi wants the cities to be economic activity hubs with solid-waste management and waste-water treatment playing an important part in the development of those cities. Dec 30, 2014

Venkaiah Naidu lauds tabling of goods and service tax bill in Parliament

New Delhi, Dec 24 (ANI): Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu lauded the Goods and Service Tax (GST) bill presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the parliament during its winter session, saying once implemented the bill will be one of the most far reaching tax reforms since independence. Jaitley had on December 19 tabled GST bill, pressing on with a key piece of reform to replace a myriad range of state taxes. The bill introduced by Jaitley needs the support of two thirds of members of parliament as well as ratification by state legislatures which is expected to happen by the next session of parliament. The government aims to bring the tax into effect from April 1, 2016. Meanwhile, Naidu also lashed out at the opposition for disrupting the proceedings of Rajya Sabha. Dec 24, 2014

Hosiery industry cheers winters as sales pick up

Ludhiana, Dec 20 (ANI): The onset of winters has brought cheers to India's largest hosiery industry in Ludhiana city, which was battling a huge stockpile of its unsold inventory. As temperatures have dipped to sub-zero levels in several north Indian states, this hosiery manufacturing hub in Punjab is witnessing a jump in sales. Owners say they hope to clear unsold stocks now. Ludhiana accounts for nearly 90 percent of the country's woolen hosiery industry and employs 400,000 people. The hosiery goods of Ludhiana are not just popular in domestic market but are also in great demand in Europe, Dubai, America and Russia as well. The hosiery industry is likely to surpass China in a race for global expansion as French buyers prefer Indian products over Chinese products. Dec 21, 2014
