Bangladesh Book Fair thrown open to bibliophiles in Kolkata

Kolkata, Oct 26 (ANI): As a part of cultural cooperation programmes between India and Bangladesh, Bangladesh Book Fair kicked-off in Kolkata. The book fair, being held at Rabindra Sadan, was inaugurated by West Bengal's Education Minister Partho Chatterjee. Chatterjee said that an initiative was underway as a part of which poets from West Bengal and Bangladesh will collaborate to write a book. A visitor to the book fair, Shreyoshi Bandhopadhay, said such initiatives help bridge the gaps created by borders. The fair has been organised by Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata in collaboration with the country's Bureau of Export Promotion and Gyan O Srijonshil Prakashak Samiti and has 35 publications houses participating Oct 26, 2014

Villagers attack policemen in Birbhum

Birbhum/ Kolkata, Oct 25 (ANI): Villagers in Birbhum district of West Bengal attacked policemen and their vehicle on Friday, while state administration alleges that the attack was politically motivated. The assailants who attacked the police were armed with crude bombs, batons and other arms. The police reportedly fired few rounds in air to disperse the attacking mob. Regional Trinamool Congress Party leader Anubrata Mondal had earlier alleged that the state BJP workers were behind the attack on the police in Birbhum. Mizoram Premier League footballer dies from spinal injuries after somersault goal celebration

Siliguri, Kolkata / Guwahati, Oct 22 (ANI): Football fraternity, condoled death of a 23-year-old footballer, who died from severe spinal cord damage after attempting to celebrate a goal with a somersault. Bethlehem Vengthlang FC midfielder Peter Biaksangzuala died on October 19 at a hospital in India's northeastern Mizoram state after the incident in Tuesday's (October 14) match in the third tier Mizoram Premier League (MPL). A veteran state level football player and coach, Joybrata Bose, said Biaksangzuala death is a big loss for the country. After scoring the equaliser against Chanmari West FC, a flipping Biaksangzuala landed awkwardly and was lying unconscious as his team mates surrounded him and gestured for help. Meanwhile, a football coach from Sports Authority of India, SK Bandopadhyay in Guwahati said that players often express themselves after scoring a goal. Meanwhile, an another former footballer, Subroto Bhattacharya, said the concerned authorities must formulate some rules to prevent such incidents in future. Oct 22, 2014
