Experts say former anti India U.S. diplomat facing spy probe acted on state policy

Washington D.C., Nov 11 (ANI): Experts have said that former US Assistant Secretary of State, Robin Raphel, who is under the scanner for espionage allegations, did nothing to suggest she was anti-India but merely acted on state policy under the Clinton administration. Robin Raphel, a retired ambassador who had been an adviser to the State Department's Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan (SRAP), was stripped of her security clearance and is part of a federal counter intelligence investigation, two sources familiar with the matter said on Friday. Raphel, who has been a controversial figure in India-U.S. ties, has been a hot topic in the Indian media ever since reports of her house being searched surfaced. She openly made remarks on Kashmir's accession to India in the 1990s, enraging many Indians. Indian media reports have even gone far enough to call her 'India-baiter', a 'pro-Pakistan partisan' and a 'Pakistan spy'. Assistant Professor Christine Fair, Center for Peace and Security Studies, Georgetown University, said Raphel was merely executing state policy when it came to India and Pakistan though she made inflammatory statements on India. Politicos condemn explosion in Kolkata

New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): Political leaders on Tuesday (November 11) condemned the deteriorating security in Kolkata city following an explosion near the office of federal counter-terror intelligence agency. A senior police official investigating the incident said no trace of explosive had been found in the area near the National Investigation Agency (NIA) office in the city. An interior ministry official had said according to preliminary information nobody had been injured. The official, who did not wish to be named, said the ministry planned to send a team from Delhi to investigate the matter. Newly-appointed Minister of State for parliamentary affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, called the incident unfortunate. Congress leader Rashid Alvi, demanded a thorough investigation in the case. Huge cache of explosives recovered from poll bound Jharkhand

Latehar, Nov 11 (ANI): Huge cache of explosives was recovered in poll bound red corridor area of Jharkhand in a joint anti-Maoist operation by commandos of paramilitary and special police unit. The explosives were recovered by elite CoBRA commando troops of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and the Jharkhand ‘Jaguars’ police unit in Latehar district of Jharkhand in a joint exercise. The items recovered in this operation include 1745 detonators, 154 pressure cookers, cortex wires, 4 quintals of urea, gunpowder, three gas cylinder based Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) of 50 kg each and other loose explosives. Superintendent of Police (SP), Latehar, Michael Raj S said that the operation was launched on a tip off intelligence in the Maoist infested area. Bangladesh PM adviser assures positive steps against cross-border militancy

New Delhi, Nov 05 (ANI): Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's adviser on Wednesday (November 05) said that both India and Bangladesh have been working to fight against terrorism which is prevalent at the porous Indo-Bangladesh border. Sheikh Hasina's adviser Gauhar Rizvi said that given the fact that Bangladesh and India share 2400 miles of common boundary and much of these boundaries are very porous. Therefore, it is very common for criminals, terrorists, smugglers cross-border flee from one country to another and take advantage to destabilise the establishment. He further said that Bangladesh has always been satisfied with the intelligence that has been shared by India with us and we consider them to be very helpful to us. Rizvi was commenting on the recent blast that took place in Burdwan district on India's eastern West Bengal. The explosions in a house on October 02 had left two suspected militants dead, while the city court had sent three accused to police custody. Hot air balloon makes emergency landing in Ajmer

Ajmer, Nov 5 (ANI): A hot air balloon with pilot and two westerners on board made an emergency landing in a prison complex in Ajmer city of Rajasthan recently, prompting the alarmed authorities to launch an immediate inquiry. The balloon, one of the main attractions of the annual five-day Pushkar fair, being held nearly 15 kilometers from Ajmer, drifted away due to strong winds in the area, flew across hills and above the artificial Anna Sagar lake in Ajmer. The police said that when the pilot finally spotted an empty field, he made an emergency landing, unaware that the space was within the premises of a jail. The jail was then placed under high alert due to the breach of security. Singh said that investigations into the matter were on. The manager of the balloon company, Kapil Sharma, came out in support of the balloon operator, claiming that such landings were common in cases of emergency. Nov 5, 2014
