Shutdown in Manipur continues for second day

Manipur, Sep 05 (ANI): Security has been stepped up as shutdown called by United Naga Council (UNC), in Manipur entered second day on Friday (September 05), to protest against recent killings of civilians by security forces. On August 30, two civilians were killed and 26 injured in violent police firing to control a rally protesting against the imposition of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) 144 in Ukhrul district. The resolution to impose a ban in the state was passed on Monday (September 01) after UNC President, L Adani, convened a high level meeting with representatives of Naga Civil Organisations and chiefs of different Nagaland tribes. Superintendent of Police, Ishak Shah, said till now the shutdown was peaceful but they feared students association might come out and obstruct vehicular movement on national highway. Sep 5, 2014

Free undertrials who have completed half of maximum sentence: SC

New Delhi, Sep 05 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday said that the undertrial prisoners, who have already spent in jail half of the period of the sentence they would have got if convicted for the offences they are charged with, will now be released. A bench led by Chief Justice R M Lodha asked the trial judges to start visiting the jails under their jurisdiction from October 1 for a period of two months and release all such prisoners. The court said that the judicial officers shall pass orders of release immediately in jails itself. Such an order, the court said, would be in compliance with the Criminal Procedure Code. Sep 5, 2014

Goa MLA says dress code for men necessary to maintain discipline on beaches

Panaji, Sep 03 (ANI): The MLA of Goa whose dress code statement created a controversy clarified his statement on Wednesday. Michael Lobo said that he did not want to impose any restrictions but wanted to maintain discipline on the beaches. He added that there is no discipline on beaches in Goa regarding costumes worn by men which makes tourists uncomfortable so he suggested the State government to make costumes compulsory for all tourists visiting the beaches. NCP leader Tariq Anwar said that some people want to take the country backward instead of forward.
