New Delhi, Nov 17 (ANI): The Congress party on Monday commenced a two day long international conference to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of country's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru amid much fanfare. While speaking at the event, party President Sonia Gandhi said that Nehru was a leader who gave all his life working for the nation and for the unity and prosperity of the nation. Gandhi said that Nehru always believed that secularism was the main crux of Indian Constitution and that he was always ready to fight against power that would pick up caste based issues in the nation. She also said that the former PM believed that secularism was not just an idea but a necessity for a diverse nation like India. The congress president also acknowledged Nehru's work in putting the path of modernization, industrialization and social reforms. The Congress party has barred the NDA leaders from the event and the invitation was sent to all non-BJP parties. TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, AIADMK supremo J Jayalalithaa and JD (U) leader Nitish Kumar, RJD led by Lalu Prasad Yadav, RLD, JD(S) and leaders of the Samajwadi Party have been invited to the conference. Modi govt launches Bal Swachhta Mission to mark 125th birth anniversary of Nehru

Mumbai/ New Delhi, Nov 14 (ANI): The Modi government on Friday launched a nationwide mission called Bal Swachhta Mission to mark the 125th birth anniversary of the country's first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. The mission was launched by Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi under which a cleanliness drive would be organized in schools across the country between 14th and 19th of this month. A series of functions including lecture, debate and symposium on the occasion will also be organized across the country. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also participated in a cleanliness drive in Mumbai on Friday. The 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' encourages people to sweep, remove garbage, debris and unauthorized encroachments from roads, markets and residential places. Nov 14, 2014

President Mukherjee and top Congress leadership reach Shanti Van to commemorate Nehru's 125th birth

New Delhi, Nov 14 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee and Congress President Sonia Gandhi reached Jawaharlal Nehru's Samadhi at Shanti Van on Friday, to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of the country's first prime minister. Along with Congress president were party Vice-President Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. A similar function has also been organised at the Teen Murti Bhavan in the evening. Later in the day, President Mukherjee will give away awards to children for their achievements. An international conference, being held to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary of Nehru is also to take place from November 17-18 and will be attended by leaders of various political parties from India and abroad. However, the Congress has not invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the conference. Meanwhile, PM Modi also paid his respect to Nehru. Nov 14, 2014
