Sharp hike in food prices dampens festive spirit of Ramadan in Kashmir

Srinagar, July 05 (ANI): The sharp hike in the prices of essential commodities during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has dampened the festive spirit in Kashmir. During the holy month, consumption of these essential commodities increases automatically as compared to other months. Another resident, Farooq Ahmad blaming the government said that the price of vegetables and fruits varies on a daily basis. Soaring prices of basic goods such as milk and potatoes lifted retail food inflation in May to 9.4 percent and there have been fears of worse to come with the delayed spread of the monsoon to the grain bowl region of northwest India. New Delhi, July 4 (ANI): At the state food ministers' meet on Friday, to discuss measures to check the unreasonable increase in prices of some food items, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that hoarders are taking advantage of the forecast of below normal monsoon. He stated that during the months of July- December every year, the prices of some food items increase due to hoarding. New Delhi, July 3 (ANI): The economic affairs committee of the Indian cabinet decided to bring onions and potatoes under the essential commodities act in order to curb the prices of these two essential vegetables on the nation's menu. Law minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad held a cabinet briefing to explain the government's decision of including onions and potatoes under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, for one year. Prasad said that the decision will prevent hoarding as it will place an upper limit on holding stock by wholesale traders and others.
