New Delhi/ Amritsar/ Patna, Dec 28 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Guru Gobind Singh's courage and spirit of sacrifice on his birth anniversary. "The life and ideals of Guru Gobind Singhji inspire eternally. He epitomised ultimate courage and a spirit of sacrifice. I bow to him," the Prime Minister tweeted. Meanwhile, people in Amritsar celebrated the Sikh leader's birthday. They took a dip in the holy pond and sought blessings from the almighty. Guru Gobind Singh formed the Khalsa by selecting five persons from different castes belonging to different regions. He baptised them as Sikhs, thus giving a lesson of casteless society and national integration. Community kitchens are also being organised. Dec 28, 2014

It Happens : Decorated churches, carol singing usher in warmth of Christmas

Bengaluru, Dec 26 (ANI): Christians across different cities of India soaked in festive spirit as they sang carols in decked up churches while attending special midnight mass prayers on the Christmas Eve. Marking the annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, Christmas is celebrated across the world on December 25. The midnight mass precedes the Christmas day and the church resounds with joyful singing of Christmas carols and thanksgiving. The people of Bengaluru in Karnataka also soaked themselves in the festive spirit as Christmas brings with it goodwill and festivity, which seemed to overwhelm people as they make merry. In Kolkata New Delhi and Chennai, devotees gathered to attend the special mass and sang carols to celebrate the Christmas spirit. A large number of people gathered at the San Thome Church in Chennai and participated in the Christmas celebrations with fervour. The priests performed rituals and organized the prayer session with an aim to mark the birth anniversary of Jesus Christ. The churches were decorated with colourful lights and idol of baby Jesus Christ along with Mother Mary and Joseph placed in the Christmas stable. The winter festival draws people from all communities to participate with pomp and gaiety. People arrived in churches for special midnight prayers on the Christmas Eve and then attended the morning prayers to mark the birth of Jesus Christ. People, drowned in festive mood, visited the decked up churches, wearing Santa caps, offered prayers and greeted each other on the season's festival in Raipur. Churches in Ranchi city were decorated as people were seen praying to Jesus on the occasion. Varanasi, Dec 25 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday paid floral tribute to Pt. Madan Mohan Malaviya at Banaras Hindu University on his 153th birth anniversary. Malaviya is most remembered as the founder of Banaras Hindu University (BHU) at Varanasi in 1916, the largest residential university in Asia and one of the largest in the world. He also served as the Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1919-1938. Later, PM Modi also paid a visit at Assi Ghat.
