Decline of insurgency paves way for the revival of tea industry in Tripura

Tripura, June 10 (ANI): Manu Valley Tea Estate in North Tripura is witnessing a boom. A few years ago, it was one among the many tea gardens in Tripura, which were on the verge of closing down due to rampant incidents of kidnapping and extortion by militant outfits. Plucking activities were almost ended in most of the estates as workers had left the area out of fear of the militants. However, with the decline in insurgency, the tea gardens have resumed production. The workers are happy to return to their traditional activities and earn a good livelihood. The tea industry in Tripura directly employs around 20,000 families. With the improvement in security situation, many small tea growers have started back to business. Tripura produces around 90 lakh kilograms of green tea annually and it aims to double the production in the next 5 years. Jun 10, 2014

Tribal refugees in Tripura repatriated to Bangladesh

Tripura, June 09 (ANI): Authorities in Tripura sent back 90 Bangladeshi tribals who entered India illegally, seeking refuge, after ethnic clashes with non-tribal Muslims in their homeland last week. The repatriation took place through Gandacherra in Dhalai district of Tripura in presence of Indian and Bangladeshi officials and border guards of both the nations. The tribal people mainly consisting of Buddhists and Hindus had fled their homeland and entered into Indian territory after some "miscreants" allegedly attacked their homes in the Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), a tribal- dominated area in southeast Bangladesh that borders India and Myanmar. Tripura, June 07 (ANI): A Border Security Force (BSF) constable reportedly committed suicide after killing a 60-year-old man along Tripura's border with Bangladesh following a quarrel with locals. At least 11 others including a woman received bullet injuries. According to angry villagers, the squabble started when security personnel of BSF stopped an elderly villager Ismile Mia from going to a pond situated next to the barbed wire border fencing in South Ramnagar in Agartala. Tripura, June 07 (ANI): A group of unemployed youth launched Bamboo Enterprises United (BENU), a handicraft workshop and community facility centre, in Katlamara village in 2004. The aim was to be self employed by utilising the locally available Kanakaich variety of bamboo. The village was once a hotbed for militants and lacked proper employment and business opportunities for the youth. These young entrepreneurs provided training to rural artisans to create various bamboo items, including furniture More than 100 people are currently engaged with the project and supply bamboo products in the country and abroad. 250 Bangladeshi Buddhist, Hindu tribals seek refuge in India after ethnic violence

Tripura, June 05 (ANI): Over 250 Bangladeshi tribal, mostly Buddhists and Hindus, fled their villages along the international border and crossed over to India's northeastern Tripura state, seeking refuge after ethnic clashes with non-tribal Muslims in their country. The Chakma and Tripuri tribes left their villages in Khagrachari district of Bangladesh and took shelter in Tripura's Gandachara area on Thursday. The exact reason for the violence has not been identified yet, said authorities. However, efforts are being made by the state government to repatriate Bangladeshi tribal. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said the tribals from Chittagong Hill Track of Bangladesh have taken shelter in the state after worsening of law and order situation in their villages. Security forces seize cannabis from Indian villages bordering Bangladesh

Tripura, May 22 (ANI): Security forces along with the state administration raided villages in Tripura bordering Bangladesh and seized huge quantity of cannabis on Tuesday. The forces seized 2,000 kilograms of cannabis worth rupees 10 million from around 50 houses in Sonamura town, a sub-division in Sipahijala district. The dried cannabis was hidden in plastic barrels, containers buried in soil. Tripura, May 18 (ANI): Tea planters in Tripura fear a massive fall in leaf production as the prolonged dry spell can push the industry into a crisis situation. Tripura, May 1 (ANI): Thousands of people were left homeless in Tripura as a rain storm destroyed hundreds of houses. The most affected area was Mandwai in Dhalai district where many trees and electric posts were uprooted due to the storm. A government official, Abdul Hossai, said that around 1500 people have been affected. The homeless people said their houses were totally destroyed and therefore they are compelled to take shelter in the relief camps along with their children. Most of the houses with thatched and tin roofs were flown away along with the strong winds while the walls of many mud houses were broken following heavy hailstorm. A storm survivor, Mita Banik, said there has been no water and electricity supply in the region after the storm. Agartala, May 1 (ANI): Tripura has approached the central government to gain access to Chittagong sea port of Bangladesh in order to transport essential commodities to the state. Earlier in a major policy change, the Bangladesh government had agreed to transport 10,000 tonnes of food grains for Tripura from Haldia (port in West Bengal) to Ashuganj (port in Bangladesh). The successful transit of the food grains through the neighboring nation will not only reduce the distance of more than 1600 km between Tripura and West Bengal through the hilly serpentine road to one-third and thus save huge amount of transportation money, but will also save precious time.
