Violent clashes erupt in Romanias largest anti-corruption protest

More than 250,000 Romanians demonstrated on 1 February against a decree passed late on 31 January that could free dozens of officials jailed for corruption. Nearly 150,00 people rallied outside the cabinet building in Bucharest. The decree was unveiled by the new Social Democrat government of Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu, and if enforced the decree would, among other things, decriminalise abuse-of-power offences in which the sums involved are less than 200,000 lei ($48,000). The Community Security Trust (CST) has claimed that a lack of support from left wing anti-racism groups has led to an increase of anti-Semitic incidents in the UK. The charity, which “protects British Jews from anti-Semitism and related threats”, claim that 2016 was the worst year it has recorded for anti-Jewish incidents. Record number of anti-Semitic incidents blamed on ‘mood of racism’ in UK following Brexit

Tensions surrounding Brexit have been partially blamed on the record number of anti-Semitic incidents in the UK in 2016. The Community Security Trust, a charity which protects British Jews from anti-Semitism and related threats, reports that more than 1,300 incidents took place last year. This includes anything from Jews receiving abuse in the street, to being violently assaulted because of their religion. The charity also says the controversy surrounding anti-Semitism in the Labour Party contributed to this rise. Feb 2, 2017
