Maldives Defence Minister arrives in India to boost bilateral ties

New Delhi, Oct 21 (ANI): Minister of Defence and National Security of the Republic of Maldives, Colonel (Retired) Mohamed Nazim, arrived in India on Tuesday to meet his Indian counterpart, Arun Jaitley, to discuss the strengthening of bilateral defence cooperation between the two nations. On Tuesday, Nazim who is on a three-day visit, was accorded the Guard of Honour and he offered homage to India's bravehearts at the Amar Jawan Jyoti in New Delhi. Post the defence-level talks, the Indian side is expected to push for closer military ties with Maldives and the host country's assistance will focus primarily on capacity building of the Armed Forces while New Delhi will also supply equipment and assist in training. The decision to ramp up defense ties with Maldives was likely in wake of China's interest in the country. Oct 21, 2014

Kashmir floods affect supply of dry fruits ahead of Diwali

Ahmedabad/ Srinagar, Oct 19 (ANI): The worst floods in the last several decades that submerged Kashmir recently, have badly affected the supply of dry fruits from the state that are packed into glittering boxes and distributed as gifts in Diwali throughout India. The state of Jammu and Kashmir is one of the major suppliers of dry fruits in India. Farmers remained the worst hit due to the massive floods in Kashmir as stagnant water in their agricultural fields damaged crops and affected the yield. Diwali, which will fall on October 23 this year, is celebrated with great fervour and gaiety all over India. Pak troops continue ceasefire violation in Poonch; politicos react

Hamirpur Sector, Oct 17 (ANI): Pakistan troops resorted to small arms fire in the Hamirpur Sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch District late last night. According to reports, the firing commenced at 9 p.m. and lasted till 10.30 p.m. There was retaliation from the Indian side, the reports added. According to a health services officer, paramedical staff have been put on high alert to supply both medicines and ambulances to any injured security personnel during the cross-LoC firing. On Thursday, a ten-year-old child was injured by the firing from across the border, and is being treated at the Poonch District Hospital.
