GNLF founder Subash Ghisingh passes away

New Delhi, Jan 30 (ANI): Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) founder Subash Ghisingh, who spearheaded the Gorkhaland movement in the 1980s, died at the age of 78. He was suffering from liver ailments and cancer and breathed his last at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Ghisingh had founded GNLF in 1980 and was the chairman of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council in West Bengal from 1988 to 2008. He had led the Gorkhaland movement to demand for a separate state for ethnic Gorkha people living in Darjeeling district of West Bengal. Jan 30, 2015

Police arrest Maoist in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Jan 29 (ANI): Acting on a tip-off, police arrested a Maoist commander in Jharkhand’s capital city Ranchi. The Maoist was involved in at least 15 cases including murder and extortion. He had launched a separate outfit named Jharkhand Gram Raksha Dal (Village Defence Party). A special team was formed to arrest the Maoist, identified as Prakash Kerketta alias Arvind. Senior Superintendent of Police Prabhat Kumar said the Maoist tried to flee but police cornered and captured him. A country made carbine, gun, bullets and motorcycle were also recovered from him. The Maoists, also known as Naxals in India, are inspired by the political philosophy of China's late Chairman Mao Zedong. Maruti Suzuki sets up manufacturing plant in Gujarat

Ahmedabad, Jan 29 (ANI): Gujarat Chief Minister Anandiben Patel laid the foundation stone of Maruti Suzuki’s car manufacturing plant in Ahmedabad city. Japan's Suzuki group plans to set up three plants in Hansalpur village of Ahmedabad, which will exclusively supply to Maruti Suzuki India Limited. The plant is likely to start production in mid-2017. The foundation stone laying ceremony was held in the presence of Japanese ambassador to India, Takeshi Yagi, Chairman and CEO Suzuki Motor Corporation, Osamu Suzuki, and Chairman of Maruti Suzuki India, RC Bhargava. While addressing a gathering, Suzuki said that setting up of the manufacturing facility was beginning of a new era and also praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. Maoists call shutdown in Jharkhand over Obama's visit

Latehar/Palamu, Jharkhand, Jan 26 (ANI): Maoists in Jharkhand called for a shutdown on Monday to protest US President Barack Obama's visit. All roads and market places were deserted as very few people dared to come out in open. Residents said they were scared of stepping out of their houses. In another Maoist stronghold Palamu district, there was a curfew-like situation with very few vehicles on roads. Transport services were hit in the district as people were stranded at railway and bus stations.The Maoists have also decided to observe January 26 as a Black Day in protest. Three Maoists surrender in Chhattisgarh

Bijapur, Jan 26 (ANI): Three Maoists, including a woman cadre, surrendered before authorities in Chhattisgarh, a senior police official said. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of paramilitary Central Reserve Police Force, Komal Singh said the surrendered Maoist sympathisers would be rehabilitated and provided monetary assistance as per government schemes. Chhattisgarh is a hotbed of Maoist rebels and security forces have mounted major operations against them.
