Activists distribute condoms to sex workers in Kolkata on World AIDS Day

Kolkata, Dec 01 (ANI): Sex workers in Sonagachi, one of Asia's largest red light districts located in Kolkata, pledged not to have sex without condoms to mark the World AIDS Day on Monday. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is spread via blood, semen and breast milk. There is no cure for the infection, but AIDS can be kept at bay for many years with antiretroviral drugs. In the global battle against HIV/AIDS, sex workers like those in Sonagachi are a crucial link in a chain of infection. A 19-year-old sex worker who is in this profession because of her truant husband, said that cleanliness is very important to fight HIV/AIDS. The Project Director of HIV Intervention Programme in Sonagachi, Puja Roy, said that free condom service was initiated aiming to make Sonagachi a 'zero AIDS' region. Dec 1, 2014

PM Modi inaugurates Nagaland Hornbill Festival, announces 28 thousand crore fund for railways connec

Kisama, Dec 01 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday inaugurated the Hornbill Festival and Nagaland Statehood Day celebrations in Kisama. Dressed as a Naga warrior while addressing people at the venue, Modi said that unlike the rest of India which had SEZs (Special Economic Zones), the Northeast region was full of NEZs, that is, 'Natural Economic Zones'. PM Modi also announced a package of rupees 28 thousand crore for the establishment of 14 new railway lines in the Northeast. He said that northeast is a perfect tourist destination and to further work on the same, railway connectivity is essential. He also talked about 24 hours power supply in the region for development. One dead as supporters of TMC and BJP clash in West Bengal

Birbhum, Dec 01 (ANI): A clash broke out between supporters of Trinamool Congress (TMC) party and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, killing one and injuring two others. The clash started over the issue of water supply in a paddy field in Baruipara village in Birbhum district. Police rushed to the area and started patrolling to check people from further conflicting. Earlier this month, TMC supporters had clashed with workers of BJP's youth wing in Jalpaiguri district after the BJP had called a 12-hour strike to support demands of tea garden employees for raising wages.
