Hindu devotees in Gorakhpur throng markets to prepare for 'Chhath'

Gorakhpur, Oct 28 (ANI): Thousands of Hindu devotees in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh thronged markets to buy the traditional items required to celebrate the Sun God festival, 'Chhath'. A devotee Bimla Mishra said that the festival is very important and is considered extremely auspicious. The Chhath, celebrated on the sixth and seventh day after Diwali, is significant for married women who observe a three-day fast and standing in waist-deep river water, present religious offerings to the Sun God. According to tradition, on the first day, devotees, mostly women, take a dip in the river and begin fasting. Another devotee, Manju Tripathi, said that devotees fast for the fulfillment of their wishes. On the second day, rituals are performed at home. Chhath is considered an extremely auspicious festival by the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. Vadodara, Oct 27 (ANI): Burglars stole two 100-year-old revolvers and a sword sheathe from Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery in Gujarat. The famous museum in Vadodara city was built in 1894 by King Sayaji Rao Gaekwad. It preserves a rich collection of art, sculpture, ethnography and ethnology of international value worth millions. Despite under heavy security blanket, the robbers managed to steal items. This has raised a question on security and police say it will investigate the matter. Massive fire breaks out at Bokaro market

Bokaro, Oct 26 (ANI): A fire broke out in a market in Bokaro on Sunday morning engulfing several shops and damaging goods at least worth three million ahead of Hindu festival of Chhath. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained and also, no loss of life was reported. Grieving about the losses incurred, a shopkeeper, Prithvi Sav, said all the shops at Dhundibad market were fully stocked with items of worship ahead of Chhath. A fire fighter, Rakesh Tiwari, said at least a little support from the shopkeepers would have helped control fire much faster. It is being estimated that had the fire fighters not reached on time, fire would have damaged material worth more than rupees 100 million. Manipur, Oct 26 (ANI): These women folk gather at the residence of Akhom Rasho Singh at Kongha Nangdeibam Leikai in Imphal East to get training in making products out of water reed, locally known as Kouna, an easily available aquatic weed. Rasho set up "Akhom Kouna Crafts" centre in 2003 and conducts training programmes across the state. It helps many unemployed people to become self-reliant. Water Reed products like bags, cushions, mats, boxes, baskets and several other decorative items have become a special attraction in Manipur and rest of the country. "Akhom Kouna Crafts" also export some products to the United States. The women workers are happy to be able to earn a decent living and are keen to impart training to other unemployed youth.
