Calais jungle: Refugees sew mouths shut to protest treatment

Refugees and migrants in France sewed their lips together in protest over their treatment in the Calais camp known as the jungle. Seven men, mostly from Iran, demonstrated in front of French police as the deconstruction of the shanty town in France continued after a judge upheld a government order last week to evict migrants living in the southern part of the camp. Thousands of competitors gathered at a farm near Wolverhampton on 31 January to take part in what has been described as the worlds toughest one-day race. Battling along a mud-sodden 15km course, the competitors must overcome obstacles such as the Brandenburger Gate, a 40ft vertical wall climb, an underwater tunnel and the Anaconda, a series of concrete pipes fixed with hanging electric wires. South Korea: Shark eats another shark in aquarium

A large sand tiger shark at a Seoul aquarium is said to have eaten a large banded houndshark in the first such incident at the aquarium. The eight-year-old female sand tiger shark, the largest in the COEX aquarium at about 2.2m long, is said to have slowly eaten the smaller five-year-old male shark bite by bite. Jan 29, 2016

Calais: Police fire teargas as refugees try to board trucks

A group of about a hundred refugees rushed to the motorway leading to the Eurotunnel on 21 January, in the hope of boarding trucks on their way to the United Kingdom, but were pushed back by police firing teargas at them. Thousands of refugees fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East have gathered in or near the northern coastal town of Calais over the past year, using it as a stop-over point before trying to enter Britain in the hope of a better life. El Chapo: Jail beefs up security over fears of a third escape

Deeply concerned that the worlds most notorious drug kingpin, Joaquin El Chapo Guzman, could escape for a third time, Mexico has beefed up security at his prison, reinforcing the floor of his cell and placing a guard on his door 24/7. Guzman, captured some six months after a brazen prison break via a mile-long tunnel that burrowed right up into his cell, is now being held in isolation in another part of the prison Altiplano. Brazil: 46 inmates break out of prison in Natal

A total of 46 inmates escaped from a public prison in the northern Brazilian city of Natal early 12 January, in the largest single prison break in the history of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The inmates, the majority of which are held on charges of theft, escaped through a tunnel dug into the ground, which directors of the Raimundo Nonato prison said measured 131ft long. Jan 13, 2016
