India gets its first transgender TV news presenter

Coimbatore, Sep 21 (ANI): A television news station recruited the country's first transgender news anchor, five months after the court ruled that transgender people be recognised as a legal third gender. Padmini Prakash, 31, who works at Lotus News in Tamil Nadu, said that she had faced a lot of discrimination throughout her life, including being disowned by her family. She worked as a dancer and then acted in Tamil soap operas before joining the news channel. Confident of making it big, Prakash said that her becoming a broadcaster could help her bring about a positive change in the Indian society. Recognizing her talent, Lotus News Channel Chairman GK Selvakumar said that Prakash’s fluency and clarity of words makes her eligible for the job. Prakash became so popular with viewers after joining the station last month that she was quickly promoted to become the face of the News Channel's daily 7 pm special bulletin. Sep 21, 2014

US call for greenfield investments in India

New Delhi, Sept 18 (ANI): In a bid to end the blockage of global trade, US top official called for green field investments in India through the 'Select USA' programme that will specifically concentrate on assisting new and expanding existing businesses. Speaking to reporters at CII Headquarters in New Delhi on Thursday Executive Director, Select USA, Vinai Thummalapally, invited competitive investors from India to USA. The director is on a seven-day visit to India and will be travelling across five cities – Delhi, Hyderabad, Coimbatore, Mumbai and Bangalore – to boost trade investment in the US. Counsellor for Commercial Affair John M McCaslin was also present at the "Select USA" press conference organised by the US Department of Commerce. Early morning visit by rare Thorn rat takes Coimbatore by surprise

Coimbatore, Sep 14 (ANI): The sudden early morning appearance of a rare species of hedgehog, commonly known as Thorn rat, in a residential area on the outskirts of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu caused much excitement as people came forward to feed and caress it. The thorn rat was rescued by a local villager near Kannampalayam village. A resident, Selvam, who rescued the thorn rat, has already handed over the animal to the Coimbatore zoo authorities. Coimbatore, Sep 05 (ANI): General Secretary of MDMK, Vaiko urged the United Nations to withdraw Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa's invitation to deliver his address at the General Assembly. The flag printers in Coimbatore claim that they produce around 5000 flags daily and this year they are working day and night and hence their labour also has doubled. Coimbatore, Aug 11 (ANI): To show his love for his motherland, a goldsmith belonging to Coimbatore city of Tamil Nadu designed the world's smallest flag made of gold. The goldsmith, UMT Raja said that he made the miniature version of the Indian flag using only 4 mg of gold, making it the smallest in the world. Besides the flag, Raja also made a miniature model depicting the Indian freedom movement using gold, which includes the Indian flag and a model of great freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi. One of the winners of the Radio Control car race, Murali Kannadasan, said that these are unusual cars which runs on methanol and jump through different tracks. Radio car racing is very popular in China, Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan.
