Indian and Bangladeshi security forces play a friendly soccer match to improve relations

Belonia, Dec 30 (ANI): It was a match with a difference as border forces of India and Bangladesh competed in a friendly soccer match in a bid to improve their relations. The match was played between the 89th battalion of India's paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) and 4th battalion of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) in Tripura. In the end, the Indian border forces prevailed over their Bangladeshi counterparts. The lone goal was scored in the second half of the match. BGB Commandant, Zilul Haque, hoped such tournaments had the potential to improve relations. Deputy Inspector General of BSF BS Tolia said the relations between the two forces were on the mend. Silk reeling center provides employment to rural women in Tripura

Tripura, Dec 29 (ANI): This silk reeling center at Badharghat in the outskirts of Agartala produces some of the finest quality silk which is high in demand. Cocoon from various silk rearing clusters and cocoon collection centers in West Tripura are collected here for taking out silk threads. Over 40 locals, mostly women are engaged at the centre in various stages of silk production and are able to earn well besides availing facilities like health insurance and pension. With help from the Central Silk board, the government-run centre has undergone modernization with eight semi-automatic reeling machines and other facilities. In 2012, the state's first power loom silk production center was started here as well. Over the years, both the Tripura and central government have been giving a lot of priority to boost silk production by introducing a number of schemes to encourage locals to take up sericulture. Northeastern states promote tourism and crafts at IITF-2014 in New Delhi

New Delhi, Dec 07 (ANI): Tourism and industrial promotion was the focus of Assam pavilion at the 34th India International Trade Fair at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi. In tandem with the theme – 'Women Entrepreneurship', the Assam Pavilion showcased various entrepreneurial activities of the women of Assam and highlighted the contributions of those who have made a special mark in their respective fields. The various products put up on display at the Fair were Assam Tea, handloom products, Assamese jewellery, bamboo and cane products and ethnic foot items, most of which are led by women entrepreneurs. A large number of crafts persons and entrepreneurs from other northeastern states like Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya also participated in the fair. Women in Tripura preserve traditional weaving of Chakma tribe

Tripura, Nov 29 (ANI): The Chakma tribe is one of the nineteen tribes of Tripura that can be identified by their unique dress patterns. Traditionally, the women folk of the community used to make their own clothes at home using loin loom. However, weaving on loin loom and the traditional art is gradually losing ground. Smriti Rekha Chakma, a resident of 79 Tilla in West Tripura is running a training centre in her backyard to teach the indigenous methods of making clothes using loin loom. Smriti makes an attempt to promote ethnic Chakma textiles that makes use of natural dyes, among the new generation. Smriti was awarded with the National Award for Excellence in shawl weaving in 2000 and four of her students have also received similar awards. Her products have been getting a good response, especially outside the state, due to the unique patterns and designs. A number of people across age groups come to her to learn the art. Decency Chakma, a student of textile designing at the National Institute of Designing, Hyderabad is one of the few trainees learning the intrinsic Chakma designs. Nov 29, 2014

Agartala, Nov 18 (ANI): Militants killed two persons, including a border guard, in Tripura. The incident took place when Border Security Force (BSF) personnel went to fetch water in a civilian water tanker of the Coastal Construction Company to a nearby area. The BSF soldier was accompanied by two other civilians, including the driver of the water tanker. A group of militants ambushed the vehicle. Patna, Nov 16 (ANI): Communist Party of India-Marxist CPI (M), on Sunday said that it would launch a nationwide protest against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government for squeezing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act MGNREGA, which provides jobs for 50 million households. CPI-M general secretary, Prakash Karat, while addressing a news briefing in Patna, said the scheme was important for the poor. The event is being organised by Bangladesh Foundation for Tourism Development and Bangladesh Inbound Tour Operators Association in collaboration with Tripura Tourism Development Forum and Tripura Tourism Development Corporation. A seminar took place to discuss the sub-regional tourism circuit linking India's northeast, Bangladesh and Myanmar, and the land routes linking the capital cities of Dhaka and Agartala. A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Secretary Subhas Das said tourism is among the most flourishing sectors in the world and plays a significant role in generating employment. And, realizing the potential of this non-traditional cash-crop, many people in the region are shifting their attention towards mushroom cultivation. The Ministry of Rural Development runs a special scheme on mushroom farming, which motivates many farmers to adopt this alternative form of farming. Meet Nilotpal Sinha, a teacher turned entrepreneur who runs "Vivekananda Mushroom centre" at South Hurua in North Tripura. Started mushroom farming in 2003 in a small area, today his centre produces 6 kg of crop everyday. Sinha earns Rs. 25,000 to 30,000 in a month by producing milky and oyster mushrooms. Tripura, Nov 06 (ANI): Tribal womenfolk encourage youngsters to save indigenous art and spread the rich culture of handmade textiles of Tripura. Realising the looming threat of their art falling into oblivion, a tribal woman, Smriti Rekha Chakma, established a small training centre to save the dying art. Chakma said that the whole idea was to inspire the new generation to learn about the rich culture of the state. Meanwhile, another tribal woman, Pramita Chakma, said that unfortunately the Chakma society has adapted to western attire which is comparatively cheaper than the indigenous one. Each tribal community in Tripura owns a handloom and designs colourful material. Chakma tribal women cover their lower body with a length of cloth wrapped around the waist the ends of which are unstitched, while the upper garment is also stitched out of handloom woven cloth.
