Visitors throng the philatelic exhibition in Agartala

Agartala, Feb 11 (ANI): Visitors thronged the two-day philatelic exhibition organised by Philatelic Bureau of the Indian Postal Department in Agartala. The district level exhibition, which was inaugurated by chairperson of Tripura Commission for Women Purnima Roy at Muktadhara Hall, was thronged by professional stamp collectors and enthusiasts. Over 1, 500 stamps from different periods, countries and events were displayed at the exhibition. Organiser, Nirmal Chakraborty, said that the exhibition was organised to promote philately and give young generation an understanding of one of India's oldest communicating system in the age of e-mails and SMSes. The organisers believed that stamps help in expanding people's knowledge in terms of politics, history, prominent events and even geography. Feb 11, 2015

Tripura observes shutdown to protest twin murder

Unakoti, Feb 10 (ANI): People observed complete shutdown to protest twin murder in Tripura. Shops and institutions remain closed while roads bore deserted look in Unakoti district to seek justice for two local youths, who were found lying on a road. The bodies with head injuries were identified as Anjan Deb and Pallab Debnath. Police suspect that both were murdered somewhere else and left over there. Superintendent of Police L Darlong said investigation was underway to nab the culprits. Both the sides expressed satisfaction and said dialogue not only helps in mutually sorting disputes at grass-root level but also helps in confidence building between the nations. Officials of both sides maintained that frequent dialogue should take place at regular intervals as it helps in better coordination and improving ties. Bangladesh delegation arrives in Tripura to discuss cross-border crimes

Agartala, Feb 03 (ANI): A team of Bangladeshi delegation arrived in Tripura to hold District Magistrate (DM) and Deputy Commissioner (DC) level talks to resolve trans-border issues. Indian officials received the 25-member delegation at Akhaura checkpost (between India and Bangladesh) in which besides the district heads, district police heads, officials of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were also present. The team consists of heads of those four districts of Bangladesh that share border with Tripura. The Bangladeshi delegation will meet with their Indian counterparts on Tuesday to discuss issues related to curbing border crimes and to increase trade between the northeastern states and Bangladesh. A visiting member from Bangladesh, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Bangladesh's Moulvibazar area, Md Kamrul Hasan said for the first time such initiative has been taken and hopefully such talks would continue in the future too. Recently, a 30 member delegation from Bangladesh was in Agartala to attend the India-Bangladesh district magistrate level Joint Border Conference. The delegation included district commissioner cum magistrates, BGB and police officials of 5 bordering districts with southern part of Tripura, while the Tripura team had DCMs, BSF and police officials of 4 bordering districts. Police arrest man for smuggling endangered lizards in Assam

Guwahati, Jan 21 (ANI): Police in Assam arrested a man from a railway station in Guwahati city for trying to smuggle 15 gecko lizards. The man identified as Sanjay Rai was trying to smuggle the endangered species to West Bengal, police officials said. He told officials he had caught the geckos from Kumarghat in Tripura and was taking them to Siliguri. Geckos have large international market value and they are transported to China from northeastern states via Nepal. Market along India-Bangladesh border inaugurated to boost trade

Agartala, Jan 14 (ANI): Trade Minister Nirmala Sitharaman along with her Bangladeshi counterpart Tofaile Ahmed inaugurated third border market or 'haat' along the border in Tripura to boost trade between the two countries. The market is set up within five kilometres radius at the border, which will enhance local trade and people-to-people contact. Sitharaman said that the market would build better relations and benefit small purchasers. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in October 2010 on Border Haats and Border Trade along the India-Bangladesh border. Meanwhile, Ahmed said he was grateful to Indian government for awarding duty free, quota free market access in almost all the items except two-alcohol and tobacco. Agartala, Jan 06 (ANI): A top police official in Tripura lauded the efforts of Bangladesh security forces in cracking down on militants operating in the country's northeastern region. Most of the rebels battling Indian security forces in the northeast have set up bases in neighbouring Bangladesh. Director General of Police (DGP) of Tripura, K Nagraj, said the state succeeded in neutralising several militant outfits due to cooperation from Bangladesh. Nagraj said Bangladeshi security forces have destroyed several camps of the banned National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition. But, the Mobile Medical Units under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) are reaching out to such remote villages. They organize free medical camps for the needy. Hundreds of people of different age groups queued up at the venue to avail a variety of facilities including general medical examination, ECG, Vision test and ear, Nose and throat check up. Free medicines were also given out to the people. In Tripura also, the security forces are taking a step forward to provide health facilities in remote areas. Security forces destroy illegal marijuana cultivation in Tripura

Tripura, Dec 31 (ANI): In a joint operation carried out by security forces and the administration, thousands of marijuana plants grown illegally in hundreds of acres in remote areas of Tripura were destroyed. Acting on a tip-off, paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF), state police, excise department and state administration found illegal marijuana cultivation across the hillocks in Jarulbachi village. The total amount of Bangladesh bound destroyed marijuana is worth more than rupees 10 million and the operation is still continuing. According to officials, there are rackets involved in illegal cultivation of cannabis particularly in the bordering area where habitation is less and presence of administration very scanty. Usually the poor border population is involved in the illegal cultivation and the final harvest is smuggled to neighbouring Bangladesh from where it goes to Middle East market as it provides hefty returns.
