Agriculture fair begins in Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore, Jan 08 (ANI): A three-day-long agriculture fair showcasing latest farming techniques has begun in state agricultural university of Tamil Nadu. There are more than 300 stalls at the fair, displaying new crop varieties and latest innovations by agricultural research centers from across the four southern India states. The main attraction of the fair is a variety of guava fruit called the Thailand guava -- which weighs up to 60 grams and has less seeds -- developed by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The exhibition is aimed at introducing farmers to technologies like high density planting, precision farming, green house cultivation, farm mechanism, use of solar energy and integrated farm management for increased crop productivity. Eight women die in a week after caesarean section in Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore, Dec 31 (ANI): Eight pregnant women have lost their lives in a week after undergoing caesarean section in Ooty town of Tamil Nadu. Most of the deaths occurred between December 24 and December 30. Some of the patients, who were referred to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital after developing complications, also did not survive. Relatives said most of them died of excessive bleeding post surgery. Anandraj, husband of a victim Saraswati, said she was keeping fine till she was brought to the hospital. Relatives of the victims allege the absence of qualified doctors on duty when the operations were carried out. India gears up for Christmas celebration

Vadodara/ Coimbatore/ Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 24 (ANI): A day before Christmas, people across India are geared up to celebrate the festival with pomp and gaiety. Hundreds of people from different communities took part in a colourful parade in Vadodara. Wearing innovative Santa caps, carrying hand made greeting cards, posters and riding on the sledge, youngsters dressed as Santas were seen singing carols and making merry to celebrate the birth of Jesus. One of the organizers, Alexis, said the main aim of the parade was to solicit the participation of all communities. In Coimbatore city, students have organised colourful patterns to mark the occasion. They have made a giant representation of Santa and a Christmas tree using 100 kilograms of salt and different colours. Christmas cake show delights visitors in Coimbatore

Coimbatore, Dec 16 (ANI): People of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu were delighted to see different varieties of cakes during a 15-day Christmas cake show. The show, which began on Sunday, attracted people, especially children, to buy cakes in shapes of Barbie Dolls, Santa Claus, Baby Jesus, cartoon characters, animals in the jungle, etc. He added that it took them 15 days to design the cakes and the show will continue till New Year. A visitor Balaji, who came with his child to buy a cake, said he felt excited to see unique cakes. Industries in Tamil Nadu disappointed by power tariff hike

Coimbatore, Dec 15 (ANI): Industries in Tamil Nadu expressed disappointment over recent hike in power tariffs by the state government. The Tamil Nadu government increased power tariffs by approximately 15 percent on Friday. President of Electricity Consumer's Welfare Association of Tamil Nadu, Balasundaram said the hike would result in their industries becoming less competitive as their costs will increase. He added that this would result in the industrialists shifting their set-up to other states where the power supply is good and cheap. The industrialists feel that the state government took the decision to increase the power tariffs suo moto without consulting them. Dec 15, 2014

Rejuvenation camp pampers 45 temple elephants in Tamil Nadu

Coimbatore, Dec 13 (ANI): Away from the maddening crowd and back in their natural habitat, a total of 45 temple elephants are being pampered at the 48-day annual rejuvenation camp in Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu. The elephants will enjoy steady supply of delicious food and mirthful games at the camp organised by the Tamil Nadu government. Around nine million rupees are being spent to pamper the elephants. The camp concludes on January 25. The state government has also earmarked about six-acre lush area along the banks of the river Bhavani in Coimbatore district to be the jumbo spa. Minister of Hindu religious and charitable endowments, Chendur Pandian, said the camp contributes significantly for the rejuvenation of the elephants belonging to temples and mutts. Every year, the forest department of the Tamil Nadu government organises this camp for elephants belonging to temples and mutts. Elephants from neighbouring Puducherry are also attending the camp.
