Court orders release of Manipuri activist Irom Sharmila

New Delhi, Aug 19 (ANI): A sessions court in Manipur, Tuesday, ordered the immediate release of civil rights activist Irom Sharmila, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike demanding repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act for the past 13 years. The 42-year-old _Iron Lady_ of Manipur was kept under house arrest following fears that she wants to commit suicide. She is being nose-fed by the state government at a government hospital, which was converted into a jail for her. The Manipuri government had slapped an attempt to suicide case on her. The court said that it is just an allegation that she wants to commit suicide, hence she cannot be kept under arrest and should be released immediately. Sharmila has been on indefinite hunger strike to demand repeal of the Act after killing of 10 civilians allegedly by the Assam Rifles near Imphal airport in November 2000. Aug 19, 2014

Commonwealth games medalists receive warm welcome in India

Agartala/ New Delhi, Aug 16 (ANI): 20- years –old Dipa Karmakar, a gymnast from Tripura has become the first Indian woman to win a medal at Commonwealth Games in gymnastic by winning a Bronze in Vault category. On her arrival in Agartala, she received a warm welcome by hundreds of her fans, relatives, sports lovers and well wishers. Dipa scored the highest in the second Vault with 15.100 to bring up her average to 14.366. Now, she is all set to play at Asian games in South Korea this September. Dipa and her coach Nandi were felicitated at Umakanta mini-stadium by Tripura’s Sports Minister Shahid Chowdhury. Meanwhile, Laishram Sarita Devi from Manipur, who bagged a silver medal in boxing, received a grand welcome on her arrival at Delhi airport. Sarita Devi not only contributed to India's tally of medals but also became the first women boxer to have made it to the Games as women's boxing was introduced for the first time this year. At least 38 people died in plane crash in Iran

Tehran, Aug 10 (ANI): An Iranian passenger plane crashed on Sunday while taking off from an airport near the capital Tehran, killing at least 38 people onboard. According to state media, an Iran-140 Sepahan Air passenger plane bound for Tabas in northeast Iran with 48 passengers and crew on board crashed on a road near Tehran's Mehrabad airport. Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) said that eight or nine had survived and quoted a doctor as saying that one of the injured had regained consciousness.
