Bihar/ Maharashtra/ Uttar Pradesh/New Delhi, Oct 30 (ANI): Scores of devotees across India, on Thursday (October 30), thronged banks of rivers and other water bodies to celebrate Hindu religious festival, 'Chhath', and prayed to the rising sun. 'Chhath puja', the four day festival, is celebrated after Diwali and holds significance for married women who observe fast and stand in waist-deep river water presenting religious offerings to the Sun god. A resident of Mumbai, Sinta Devi, said that people mark this festival after their wishes get fulfilled. Bodhgaya, Oct 29 (ANI): Westerners in the Buddhist holy town of Bodhgaya launched a cleanliness drive on Wednesday (October 29), the first day of the Hindu festival of 'Chhath'. Chhath is considered an extremely auspicious festival by the people of Bihar and in parts of Uttar Pradesh. The Chhath, celebrated on the sixth and seventh days after Diwali, the festival of lights, is significant for married women who observe a three-day fast and standing in waist-deep river waters, present religious offerings to the Sun God.The cleanliness drive was led by a French national, Jean Pierre, who runs a school for poor children in Bodhgaya. Sharing his knowledge on the philosophy of Hinduism, Saraswati said the encyclopaedia gives an insight into theories of the religion. The Hindu Diaspora in Britain has emerged to be flourishing. Gorakhpur, Oct 28 (ANI): Thousands of Hindu devotees in Gorakhpur district of Uttar Pradesh thronged markets to buy the traditional items required to celebrate the Sun God festival, 'Chhath'. A devotee Bimla Mishra said that the festival is very important and is considered extremely auspicious. The Chhath, celebrated on the sixth and seventh day after Diwali, is significant for married women who observe a three-day fast and standing in waist-deep river water, present religious offerings to the Sun God. According to tradition, on the first day, devotees, mostly women, take a dip in the river and begin fasting. Another devotee, Manju Tripathi, said that devotees fast for the fulfillment of their wishes. On the second day, rituals are performed at home. Chhath is considered an extremely auspicious festival by the people of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
