Assam and West Bengal urge central govt for scheme on protection of Rhinos

Siliguri, Dec 02 (ANI): India's northeastern and eastern states demanded assistance from central government for protection and conservation of rhinoceros. A programme to create awareness on conservation of rhinoceros was organised in West Bengal which was attended by various conservationists including chairman of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Doctor Bibhab Kumar Talukdar and Chief Conservator of Forests, Ujjal Bhattacherjee. Urging for a scheme for conservation of dwindling species, IUCN chairman Talukdar said last year 41 rhinoceros were killed in Assam. According to the last Rhino census conducted by the state forest department, there are more than 50 rhinoceros in Garumara National Park and more than 200 in Jaldapara, but the number of this unique species is not increasing. Activists distribute condoms to sex workers in Kolkata on World AIDS Day

Kolkata, Dec 01 (ANI): Sex workers in Sonagachi, one of Asia's largest red light districts located in Kolkata, pledged not to have sex without condoms to mark the World AIDS Day on Monday. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is spread via blood, semen and breast milk. There is no cure for the infection, but AIDS can be kept at bay for many years with antiretroviral drugs. In the global battle against HIV/AIDS, sex workers like those in Sonagachi are a crucial link in a chain of infection. A 19-year-old sex worker who is in this profession because of her truant husband, said that cleanliness is very important to fight HIV/AIDS. The Project Director of HIV Intervention Programme in Sonagachi, Puja Roy, said that free condom service was initiated aiming to make Sonagachi a 'zero AIDS' region. Dec 1, 2014

Students raise awareness in Chennai on eve of World AIDS Day

Chennai, Nov 30 (ANI): Students held posters and raised awareness on the eve of World AIDS Day at a railway platform in Chennai city on Sunday. December 01 is celebrated as World AIDS Day and on this occasion a non-governmental organisation, 'Indian Development Foundation', organised an awareness programme at Chennai Egmore railway station. Manager of the NGO, Sreeram said that such programmes help in creating awareness on the disease and assists infected persons to lead a normal life. He also thanked the government for helping the NGO in various ways by providing support for such events. Bird flu symptoms not related to poultry products consumption: Indian Medical Association

Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 29 (ANI): Indian Medical Association in Kerala in association with National Rural Health Mission conducted awareness camp on bird flu virus and said that symptoms are not related to poultry products consumption. Doctors and health officials ate chicken and eggs in front of people in a bid to make them understand that consuming poultry products was not related to the outbreak of bird flu virus. A bird flu virus was found in India, H5N1 strain, which can be transmitted to humans, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) had said on Thursday. However, the organization said it was not an alarming situation, as India was fully prepared to deal with such a crisis because it had faced the outbreak of the virus in the past. However, no human case has been reported since 2003. President of Indian Medical Association of Kerala, Doctor Sreejith N Kumar said that people do not need to get panicked as there are low chances of spreading the virus from birds to human. District Programme Manager of National Rural Health Mission, Doctor B. India, Mozambique enter new oil venture

New Delhi, Nov 28 (ANI): India and Mozambique signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on cooperation in the field of oil and gas for five years in New Delhi on Friday. Minister of foreign affairs and cooperation of the Southeast African country, Oldemiro Julio Marques Baloi, and India’s petroleum minister Dharmendra Pradhan entered into this venture with an aim to enhance bilateral cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual benefit of both the countries. The two sides discussed various areas of mutual cooperation in the energy sector. The minister stated that both countries should work together in gas and oil sector so that the commercial interest of both the countries can be protected. Veena Malik sentenced to 26 years in jail for blasphemy

New Delhi, Nov 26 (ANI): Pakistani actress Veena Malik has been sentenced to 26 years in jail for blasphemy. She, along with the owner of Pakistan's biggest media group, Geo TV, and her actor husband Asad Bashir Khan, has been sentenced to 26 years in prison by an anti-terrorism court for allegedly airing a blasphemous programme. Mir Shakil-ur-Rahman, owner of Geo and Jang group, was accused of allowing the airing of a blasphemous programme by Geo television in May that played a religious song as a backdrop to Malik and Khan's mock marriage. Judge Shahbaz Khan also sentenced both Malik and Bashir along with TV host Shaista Wahidi for 26 years each. The ATC also imposed a 1.3 million Pakistani rupees fine on the convicts and ordered that their properties should be sold to raise the fine, if they failed to pay it. The judge said in his judgment that all four accused committed profanity. The court in its 40-page verdict also asked the police to arrest the convicts, an official said. He said that the convict can appeal in the regional high court in Gilgit-Baltistan. Meanwhile, reports claim that the four people named are all out of Pakistan at the moment.
