SC stays arrest of activist accused of fudging funds for 2002 riots victims

New Delhi, Feb 13 (ANI): The Supreme Court of India on Friday (February 13) stayed the arrest of social activist in an alleged misappropriation of funds case till February 19. The court asked both Teesta and the Gujarat government to file relevant documents before it. The apex court ruling came after the Gujarat state High Court rejected Setalvad's anticipatory bail plea in the case. She is accused of embezzlement of funds collected on behalf of 2002 riot victims in Gujarat. In January 2014, police had registered a case against Setalvad, her husband Javed Anand and others for allegedly usurping rupees 15 million collected by them in form of donations for turning the colony into a riots museum. Politicos react on Teesta Setalvads bail rejection by Gujarat HC

New Delhi, Feb 13 (ANI): Congress leader Manish Tewari on Friday said activist Teesta Setalvad had played an important role in exposing the perpetrators of Gujarat riots and bringing them to justice and added that the steps taken against her were out of a sense of political vendetta. The Supreme Court had yesterday stopped the Gujarat police from arresting activist Teesta Setalvad for a day, following a petition by senior lawyer Prashant Bhushan. The apex court's relief for Setalvad's came after her anticipatory bail plea in connection with an embezzlement case was rejected by the Gujarat High Court. Besides Setalwad, her husband Javed Anand, former Congress MP Ehsan Jafri's (who was killed in Gujarat during the 2002 riots) son Tanvir Jafri are accused of misappropriating funds worth over Rs. 1 crore. Denying any misuse of funds, Setalvad had reportedly blamed political motives behind the case. Meanwhile, the BJP said that it would wait for the Supreme Court’s decision now over the case.
