Guwahati, Feb 07 (ANI): Water Resources Minister Uma Bharati said that better flood management system would be brought into place in Assam which suffers huge losses due to floods every year. Assam, comprising of the Brahmaputra Valley and the Barack river valleys, is prone to natural disasters with annual floods and frequent mild earthquakes. Speaking at the third Assam Water Resource Conference in Guwahati, Bharati called for judicial usage of available water resources for the development of the state. The two-day conference was inaugurated by Bharati along with Minister of State in Prime Minister's Office (PMO), Dr Jitendra and Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi. New Delhi, Feb 06 (ANI): Nobel laureate and child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi warned that children end up bearing the brunt of natural calamities caused by climate change as families get displaced, they are forced into child labour, prostitution and child trafficking. Satyarthi was speaking at the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit (DSDS) in the national capital. The DSDS, which is a global platform for experts to hammer out goals for 2015 climate talks, aims at discussing sustainable development goals with emphasis on energy and environment and clean energy for all. Thousands of children, mostly from poor rural areas, are taken to the country's cities every year by trafficking gangs who sell them into bonded labour or hire them out to unscrupulous employers, promising to send their parents their wages. Meanwhile, Chairman of UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Rajendra Pachauri said that the job of child rights activists like Satyarthi was only going to get infinitely more difficult with the impact of climate change. Srinagar, Feb 05 (ANI): With thick blanket of snow covering Kashmir, officials in Srinagar city's Dachigam national park are busy arranging food material for birds and animals, deprived of natural vegetation due to snow. Kashmir has been receiving heavy snowfall for the last four days, disrupting normal life. According to wildlife officials, animals especially the endangered Hangul deer wander outside their safe havens in search of food. The officials have placed huge chunks of dry willow salt in various parts of the national park to feed the endangered species of animals. According to 2009 census, the population of the Hangul, also known as the Kashmiri stag, was estimated to be between 201 and 234, against 117-180 in March 2008. Muzaffarabad, February 03, 2015: Angry protests over acute electricity crisis, Muzaffarabad comes to a halt. Amid pitch darkness and no electricity, markets are shut, offices locked. Students, common people, residents of Muzaffarabad take to streets every evening like this, tired of load shedding for up to 20 hours every day, these people are angry and agitated. Water and power development authority or WAPDA is solely responsible for the acute power crisis in PoK. WAPDA is diverting PoK's share of electricity to Pakistani towns and cities. As a result, education, business and people from all walks of life, mostly the poor are the worst affected. It is not the first time that people have shut down their businesses and come out to protest against government's arbitrary diversion of electricity. Many times in the past the protests have turned violent. Despite resistance from public, Mangla Dam was raised to divert PoK's natural resources to Pakistan. Whenever opposition intensifies, Pakistan sends them inflated bills. No one is listening to the cries of common people of PoK.
