China smog: Greenpeace reports some easing pollution levels in 2015

China may have found itself once again in the news for the choking smog which blanketed many of its cities over the past month, but pollution in the worlds number two economy actually eased in 2015, data compiled by Greenpeace shows. The data, which covers 367 cities, showed average PM2.5 levels dropping by 10 percent in 2015 compared with the previous year. However, even with the improvement, 80 percent of the cities in the survey still failed to meet national air quality standards. Jan 20, 2016

Burkina Faso: Video shows security forces battling Islamist gunmen

Security forces battled suspected Islamist fighters on 15 January, who were holding hostages at a hotel used by foreigners in Burkina Fasos capital, gendarmes and witnesses said. The gunmen stormed the Splendid Hotel in Ouagadougous business district, burning cars outside and firing in the air to drive back crowds before security forces arrived, prompting an intense exchange of gunfire. Honduras: Ancient White City artefacts removed from jungle

Archaeologists in the dense jungle of Honduras began extracting on 12 January dozens of artefacts from what is thought to be the mythical White City, a site where they believe twin cities from an ancient civilisation once thrived. The artefacts were unearthed at the site of an unknown civilisation which was discovered in 2012, in the eastern Mosquitia region of Honduras, about 200 miles northeast of the Honduran capital.
