In the eastern city of Leipzig, well over 2,000 anti-Muslim Legida protestors took to the streets on 11 January, their ranks swelled by anger over the Cologne attacks. They yelled Merkel needs to go! and one carried a sign featuring Merkel wearing a hijab and the words: Merkel take your Muslims with you and get lost. Arsene Wenger confident of signing Mohamed Elneny from FC Basel

Arsenal are hoping to complete the signing of midfielder Mohamed Elneny from Swiss champions FC Basel by the end of the week, with only work permit issues standing in the way of the switch, manager Arsene Wenger said on 11 January. Brazil: Protests against transport fare hike turns violent in Sao Paulo

A protest against an increase in public transportation fares in Brazils largest city turned violent on 8 January, as demonstrators broke bus windows and torched objects to block traffic. Police fired tear gas and hit protesters with batons to disperse the crowd of approximately 2,000 people in business capital Sao Paulo. Jan 9, 2016
