India celebrates Valentine's Day amid threats from right wing Hindu groups

Agra/ Kolkata/ Gurgaon, Feb 15 (ANI): Despite reports of Hindu right wing organisations harassing couples in public places, Valentine's Day was celebrated across India. In a first, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Akhilesh Yadav inaugurated a 'Lover's Seat' with the picturesque epitome of love, Taj Mahal in the background in Agra city. Yadav also posed for photographs at the 'Lover's Seat' with his wife Dimple. He said that for the state Valentine's Day was actually 'Taj Day'. Another attraction at the event was a black Taj Mahal replica made of sand by artist Sudarshan Patnaik. Meanwhile, in Kolkata city of West Bengal, All India Students' Association (AISA) held a protest against the Hindu nationalist organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) for spreading communalism and impinging on people's freedom to choose partners. Valentine police punish lovers in Kanpur

Kanpur/ Chennai, Feb 14 (ANI): Right-wing Hindu group, Bajrang Dal, in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday harassed and beat up couples spending time together in public places on Valentine's Day, deeming the occasion as vulgar. Bajrang Dal workers in Kanpur snaked through streets on motorcycles, waving flags and shouting anti-Valentine slogans, and stormed public places to catch unguarded couples. He added that young couples should refrain from looking at Bollywood movies and actors as their inspiration. Meanwhile, in a unique ceremony in Chennai, stray dogs were married off as an opposition to Valentine's Day. Around 35 members of a regional Hindu Munnani group carried out a procession in streets, garlanded and smearing dogs' heads with colour. New Delhi, Feb 14 (ANI): Taking a jibe at the Hindu Maha Sabha, Congress leader Digvijay Singh on Saturday extended Valentine Day wishes to those who love abusing him and called the former the 'spoil sports'. "Happy Valentine's Day to all. More to all those who love abusing me! Damn all the spoil sports like Hindu Maha Sabha and other fringe elements," he tweeted.
