Floods in Odisha kill 37, water level of flooded river recedes

Bargarh, Aug 10 (ANI): Official in Odisha said that water level of flooded Mahanadi river has receded even though the death toll reached 37. However, the flood situation in Bargarh district remained grim as the back water of Hirakud dam entered five villages. The district administration has evacuated 1300 people from these villages. Meanwhile, Special Relief Commissioner, Pradipta Mahapatra, said there will be very little rainfall in catchment area of Mahanadi river and they have reduced the number of gates to 24 in the reservoir. People have died in Odisha since rivers burst their banks, inundating villages and farmland and forcing around 60,000 people to seek refuge in relief camps. Mahapatra also added 37 people have died due to floods and free kitchen service is being provided to people in the relief camps. Aug 10, 2014

Head of a village Panchayat Sudhir Pradhan said that the government does not take any concrete steps and they have to face this situation time and again. More than 35 people have died in Odisha since rivers burst their banks, inundating villages and farmland and forcing around 60,000 people to seek refuge in relief camps. Bhubaneswar/Bhadrak, Aug 06 (ANI): Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, on Wednesday said the officials were working to control the flood situation. Special Relief Commissioner, PK Mohapatra, said the state government evacuated 47,000 people to safer places in 11 districts. He said district administrations have been asked to stay on high alert as around 12 lakh cusecs water will be released in Mahanadi river. The state government has taken steps to evacuate people from low lying areas and made arrangements to open free kitchens for the flood affected people, keep strict vigil on the weak river embankments.
