Venkaiah Naidu lauds tabling of goods and service tax bill in Parliament

New Delhi, Dec 24 (ANI): Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu lauded the Goods and Service Tax (GST) bill presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the parliament during its winter session, saying once implemented the bill will be one of the most far reaching tax reforms since independence. Jaitley had on December 19 tabled GST bill, pressing on with a key piece of reform to replace a myriad range of state taxes. The bill introduced by Jaitley needs the support of two thirds of members of parliament as well as ratification by state legislatures which is expected to happen by the next session of parliament. The government aims to bring the tax into effect from April 1, 2016. Meanwhile, Naidu also lashed out at the opposition for disrupting the proceedings of Rajya Sabha. Dec 24, 2014

Cold wave grips North India due to snowfall in upper regions

Jaipur/ New Delhi, Dec 23 (ANI): Intense cold conditions coupled with fog paralysed normal life in northern India on Tuesday as mercury dipped further due to snowfall and rainfall in upper regions. In Rajasthan, people sat around bonfires to keep themselves warm. Inclement weather condition has aggravated problems of daily wage labourers and homeless people. In capital New Delhi, trains were running behind scheduled time due to fog. The maximum temperature recorded was 15 degrees Celsius and minimum around seven degrees. Passengers said they had to sleep at railway station as the trains were getting delayed by several hours. Kashmir shivers as cold wave shows no signs of abating

Srinagar, Dec 23 (ANI): People of Jammu and Kashmir continue to shiver and daily life is paralyzed as the cold wave in the state shows no signs of weakening anytime soon.Minimum temperatures in Jammu and Kashmir have dropped to sub-zero level forcing people to stay indoors. The sudden dip in temperatures is said to have been caused by snowfall in the Himalayas and has adversely impacted the upper half of the country. The cold wave has compounded the troubles of homeless people and those going out to work and earn their living. A resident, Mashrum Ali, said on Monday that it was quite difficult to step out of homes early in the mornings. To make things worse for the people of Kashmir, Chilai Kalan- the harshest forty day period of winter- arrived in Kashmir with upper reaches of the valley receiving fresh snowfall on Saturday. People are busy preparing and stocking up for Chilai Kalan. Reportedly, this year Chilai Kalan has arrived earlier than expected sparking fears that temperatures may dip lower than the average. Delhi's Lt Gov Najeeb Jung appeals people to help homeless during winters

New Delhi, Dec 22 (ANI): Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung on Monday appealed Delhiites to help the city's homeless by giving them warm clothes and blankets during the harsh winters. Jung added that people should donate blankets, clothes etc, at the nearest night shelters only, and not on the streets or roads as this will motivate homeless people to use the shelters and not sleep in the open. The Delhi government has established 221 night shelters for homeless people with basic facilities such as clean drinking water, toilets, blankets, bedding etc. Dec 22, 2014
