India's first double hand transplant successful, say doctors

Kochi, Feb 01 (ANI): Doctors successfully conducted India's first double hand transplant on a train accident victim in Kochi city of Kerala. The surgery was conducted at Amrita Institute of Medical Science on 30-year-old Manu, who received the hands of a 24-year-old road accident victim. Over 20 surgeons conducted the surgery that took over 16 hours over January 12 and 13. At least 110 successful hand transplants have been conducted so far in countries like US, European countries, China and Australia, since the first one in France 13 years ago. The patient, Manu, expressed his delightfulness and was eager to get back to his daily chores. Head of the Plastic Surgery Department, Amrita Institute of Medical Science, Doctor Subramania Iyer, called it a major feat for Indian doctors. He further said that both the hands were accepted by the patient's body 14 days after the surgery. Manu would be able to move his hands on his own soon and sensations will slowly return in three to four months, Dr Iyer added. Feb 1, 2015

Karachi city shuts over killing of political worker

Karachi, Jan 29 (ANI): Pakistan's city Karachi came to a standstill on Thursday after a political party called for a day of mourning following a body recovered from Karachi was identified as of its activist. Sohail Ahmed, a worker of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), was found missing in December. His bullet-riddled body was found dumped in the area of Mochko police station. MQM says Ahmed's murder was not the first case of extrajudicial killing and that more than 35 of MQM's activists have been killed in recent times. On Thursday, most businesses were shut and the public transport remained off the road in Karachi and other parts of Sindh. Private schools were also shut in Karachi. Woman dies after being thrown out of moving train by RPF constables in Varanasi

Varanasi, Jan 29 (ANI): A 25-year old woman, Rita died after some Railway Protection Force (RPF) constables threw her out of a moving train while asking for bribery in Varanasi city. A native of West Bengal, the victim, who was travelling to Kanpur along with her 18-month old daughter, brother and an uncle, died while undergoing a treatment in a government-run hospital in Varanasi. The incident took place at around 9.30 pm on Wednesday in which victim’s brother also suffered injuries. The constables fled from the scene when the train halted at another station. Meanwhile, Circle Officer, Government Railway Police, OP Singh said the constables, if found guilty, would be booked under law. Reportedly, when Circle Officer of Government Railway Police Allahabad visited the hospital with two RPF officials to further investigate the matter, the officials deliberately asked irrelevant questions from Pal and Rita’s brother to confuse them.
