Kashmir winter festival aims to attract tourists post devastating floods

Srinagar, Dec 31 (ANI): A three-day winter festival organized by the tourism department of Jammu and Kashmir is attracting people as the arrival of tourists to the state has picked up months after floods devastated the valley. Kashmir saw a major decrease in number of tourists after September deluge in which hundreds of people were killed and thousands of villages were destroyed. However, the tourism department is trying to regain what it lost with its winter event called 'Jashne Chilai-e-Kalan'. Chilai kalan is the coldest 40 day winter period in the northern state that starts from December 21. The Kashmir valley is witnessing intense cold wave with sub-zero temperatures. The purpose behind organizing this winter festival is to let people know that Jammu and Kashmir is back to normalcy.Various cultural activities are being held during the festival where dancers and musicians perform, comedy and folk theatre acts are showcased and people dress up as snowman to entertain the kids. Hill resort of Shimla gears up for tourist rush

Shimla/Manali, Dec 31 (ANI): Authorities in Shimla have stepped up security arrangements in view of an unprecedented rush of revellers for the New Year celebrations. People have been thronging several tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh, but capital Shimla has recorded the maximum footfall. Deputy Commissioner of Shimla district administration, Dinesh Malhotra, said additional 200 police and home guards have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident. The snow-bound region is the favourite destination of the tourists from the plains of northern India. Hoteliers are expecting a good business this season after authorities lifted travel advisories following improvement in weather. The state tourism department is organizing an annual winter carnival in the first week of next year in a bid to attract tourists. Tourists throng Manali to explore adventure sports

Manali, Dec 30 (ANI): Thousands of tourists thronged Solang Valley to explore adventure sports after Himachal Pradesh received good snowfall this winter season. Himachal Pradesh, which has turned into a paradise of skiers, is attracting sports lovers from across the country to explore snow sports including trekking, skiing, paragliding and rafting. The snow-covered hill resort has always been the preferred holiday destination for domestic as well as foreign tourists for ice games. Tourists were in high spirits riding on yak and playing with snow. A tourist, Pooja Jain, said her family had visited Solang valley earlier to enjoy the combination of scenery and sports. Dec 30, 2014
