Kashmir sets up special relief camps for flood rescuees

Jammu, Sep 16 (ANI): Kashmir has set up a special relief camp in the winter capital of Jammu for rescuees from flood ravaged valley, besides providing them with food and medical facilities, even as arrangements are being made to send the tourists back to their respective hometowns. The victims were rescued and flown to Jammu from where free bus and train services are being provided to take them back to their respective states. Most of the labourers were without basic needs for nearly 10 days and after being stationed at the relief camp in Jammu city, they were provided with free food and medical checkups. The authorities have also opened the route connecting Jammu city with the valley, via Kishtwar to Srinagar. Sep 16, 2014

Ramban, Sep 16 (ANI): Flood-ravaged Kashmir's Jammu-Srinagar National Highway reopened on Tuesday for vehicular traffic after remaining closed for 13 days due to landslides triggered by incessant rains. Acting as life-line of the valley, opening of the road will boost the relief operations. On the intervening night of September 02 and 03, a five-km road patch was washed away in flash floods besides multiple landslides, sinking of road and flooding at various places in Ramban district. Over 3000 to 4000 vehicles, particularly trucks carrying supplies had been stranded on the Highway. Following an inspection of the road and assessment of the overall situation by the senior officers of the traffic police and district administration on Monday morning the NH44 was opened for a trial for the one-way traffic to clear about 320 vehicles, mostly the trucks. A video of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leader Yasin Malik surfaced on Monday in which he allegedly asked voluntary relief workers not to distribute food items, as only JKLF can operate in that particular area. Malik and his team later looted the relief materials and boats of aid workers and started distributing the items among the victims. The inhuman act of separatists is not limited to distribution of relief materials but they also threatened patients to avoid Army assistance despite strong protests by the locals. Srinagar, Sep 15 (ANI): Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan visited a relief camp and a hospital to meet flood victims and take stock of the situation in Srinagar. Vardhan said the government has taken a number of steps to prevent water-borne diseases as water recedes from the residential areas. Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah, assured to provide relief and to rescue people stranded in the floods in the valley. Abdullah said paramilitary and defence forces are pressed into service to rescue people stranded on rooftops and to reach them with relief materials including food packets. Meanwhile, Director General (DG) of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), OP Singh, said 23 teams of NDRF have been deployed with boats to carry out rescue operations in flood-hit areas. The pilgrims who returned gave credit to the Indian army and Modi government for their safe rescue.
