National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill passed by Rajya Sabha

New Delhi, Aug 14 (ANI): In a major political victory for the Narendra Modi government, the Rajya Sabha on Thursday passed the landmark National Judicial Appointments Commission Bill, 2014 by a majority. The Bill was passed unanimously by the Lok Sabha yesterday. The Bill was passed by a voice vote following a detailed discussion on the government_s proposal to scrap the existing collegium system for appointment of judges in higher courts. After the bill becomes law, the government will have a say in the appointment of Supreme Court and high court judges after 21 years. Aug 14, 2014

New Delhi, Aug 14 (ANI): The Judicial Appointments Bill which was passed unanimously in Lok Sabha on Wednesday will be introduced in Rajya Sabha on Thursday. On one hand, Political leaders hope that the bill shall be passed in the Upper House too but on the other some think that the bill should have been discussed more. Congress leader Rashid Alvi said that the government should have given more time for discussion over the Bill. NCP leader Tariq Anwar said that he hoped the Bill shall be passed in Rajya Sabha. AAP begins door-to-door campaign to demand fresh elections in Delhi

New Delhi, Aug 13 (ANI): Members of Aam Aadmi party launched a door-to-door signature campaign on Wednesday asking people to sign a petition and join hands with the party in demand of re-elections in Delhi. Delhi has been under President_s rule since February when Chief of AAP, Arvind Kejriwal, resigned from the post of chief minister after his 49-day-old government failed to table its Lokpal Bill in the assembly. The assembly has been under suspended animation ever since and no party has staked a claim to form the government. The campaign was initiated from the Patparganj assembly constituency in Delhi by AAP leaders, Manish Sisodia and Ashutosh in national capital, New Delhi. However, Leader of AAP, Manish Sisodia said that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is not responding to the issues of price rise and corruption in Delhi. The signature campaign will be held for 15 days. New Delhi/ Ahmedabad, Aug 12 (ANI): The government_s move to scrap the previous Bill on judicial appointments and introduce a new one in the Lok Sabha got mixed reactions from other political parties on Tuesday. Law minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, on Monday (August 11) tabled the Judicial Appointments Commission Bill in the Lok Sabha and it will replace the existing collegium system when it comes into effect. Earlier, Prasad had told the parliament the government was keen to set up a committee to appoint judges in wake of allegations of judicial corruption by a former judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Markandey Katju.
