New Year begins with marathon in Shimla

Shimla, Jan 01 (ANI): Local administration in Shimla on Thursday (January 01) organized a high altitude half-marathon to propagate federal government's Clean India Mission on New Year day. About 200 participants ran the 2.5- kilometer stretch. Addition Deputy Commissioner (ADC) of Shimla, Unis, who flagged off the marathon, said the importance of the otherwise an annual exercise was to spread awareness about cleanliness. Some of the participants in the marathon vowed to make the run a part of their daily routine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the nationwide cleanliness mission on October 02 last year to raise awareness at the grassroots level for better sanitation in a bid to create a sense of responsibility among citizens under the banner of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan' or Clean India Mission. Tribal groups call for Bandh in West Bengal

Birpara, Dec 27 (ANI): Several tribal groups on Saturday have called for shutdown in Birpara area of Alipurduar district of West Bengal following the attacks by the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) which killed over 80 people. NDFB militants killed over 80 people in the Sonitpur, Kokrajhar and Chirang districts of Assam ths week. Various groups such as All Assam Tea Tribes Student Association, Adivasi Chhatra Sangathan, Akhil Assam Bhojpuri Parishad, All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) and seven other groups had observed Bandh in several areas of Assam even on Friday. 'Dabbawalas' wield broom on Mumbai streets as part of 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'

Mumbai, Dec 26 (ANI): World renowned 'dabbawalas' (lunch box carriers) of Mumbai on Friday wielded brooms to sweep streets after Prime Minister Narendra Modi nominated them to join 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'. The 'dabbawalas' are city's lifeline as the team of around 5000 people supply food to around 200,000 office goers every day. They carry hot food in lunch boxes from the houses of Mumbai residents in the morning and deliver them at their workplace. A group of lunch box carriers assembled at Lower Parel area and swept the streets and footpaths with a promise to involve their customers also in this campaign. PM Modi wields broom in Varanasi to mark 'Good Governance Day'

Varanasi, Dec 25 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi takes part in Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan during the visit to his parliamentary constituency as part of Good Governance Day celebrations across nation. During his one day visit to Varanasi, Modi wielded broom at the Assi Ghat and outside near Jagannath temple in the holy city. Modi today also lauded people for helping rid the Assi Ghat of mounds of soil and garbage to restore the historical site to its old glory. He also nominated noted people and institutions for the Clean India Mission. During the visit, Modi is expected to lay the foundation stone for an inter-university centre for teachers' education to be named after Madan Mohan Malviya.
