Imphal, Oct 24 (ANI): Champion pugilist M.C. Mary Kom on Friday wielded a broom and participated in the 'Swacch Bharat Abhiyan' launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 2. She appreciated the cleanliness drive. The 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' was launched nationwide to focus on sanitation, hygiene and waste management. It encourages people to sweep, remove garbage, debris and unauthorized encroachments from roads, markets and residential places. The 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' aims at making India a clean country by 2019, the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. Oct 24, 2014

Venkaiah Naidu wields broom to clean cyclone-hit Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, Oct 24 (ANI): Urban Development Minister, M Venkaiah Naidu, on Friday picked up the broom to clean cyclone-hit port city of Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, as part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cleanliness campaign. Andhra Pradesh and Odisha were recently hit by cyclone Hudhud that left a trail of destruction and killed around 41 people. It ripped apart tens of thousands of mud-and-thatch homes, flattened rice, banana and sugarcane plantations and snapped electricity lines. Prime Minister Modi launched the nationwide cleanliness mission on October 02 to raise awareness of cleanliness and better sanitation among its citizens under the banner of 'Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan' or Clean India Mission. On Friday, Naidu said Mahatma Gandhi had made inspiring statement that "cleanliness is next to godliness." To drive home his point, Modi had ordered government workers including his ministers to participate in the drive. However, Naidu added India can only be cleaned with the efforts put in by all citizens, who should volunteer with the aim to improve health problems. Oct 24, 2014

Tendulkar also expressed his intention to adopt a village under 'Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana'. Modi had launched Saansad Adarsh Gram Yojana (SAGY), under which each member of the parliament would adopt three villages and ensure their physical and infrastructural development by 2019. New Delhi, Oct 13 (ANI): Congress Leader Shashi Tharoor was on Monday removed from the post of spokesperson of the party. The decision came after Congress President Sonia Gandhi accepted the recommendation of AICC disciplinary committee to remove Tharoor from the list of spokespersons. Accepting the decision of the party, Tharoor said that he accepted the decision taken by the leadership as a loyal party worker. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) had earlier complained against Tharoor, accusing him of praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi's policies.
