Devotees in Vadodara prepare gigantic 'Modak' sweet to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi

Vadodara, Sep 01 (ANI): A group of devotees in Gujarat prepared a gigantic dumpling shaped sweet, Modak, on the occasion of the Hindu festival of Ganesh Chaturthi. Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day popular celebration during which it is believed that Lord Ganesha bestows his presence on earth for all his devotees. The group had initiated to create the lord's favourite sweet weighing 800 kilograms for the people of Vadodora city. The sweet was made into five layers each consisting of a different ingredient. The organiser of the sweet making event, Ankur said that a team of seven to eight people prepared the biggest sweet in around 36 hours. Devotees buy decorated and colourful idols of Lord Ganesha and establish them in their homes for 10 days and revel in religious pageantry. Sep 1, 2014

Kolkata, August 29 (ANI): An exhibition of paintings in Kolkata showcased tribal and ethnic art forms of different regions of India. The exhibition called ‘Art of the Tribal Folk’ featured the work of 21 artists from Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. For the artists, their work is a reflection of their heritage passed down from generation to generation. Folklore, aboriginal and religious beliefs feature in each of the paintings. Organiser of the event, Surva Choudhary, said while originally most paintings were made using natural substances like turmeric and henna on mud surfaces, modern day painters use other materials. Traditionally, these pictographs were made during festive occasions. They served multiple purposes like appeasing of gods, promoting fertility, warding off evil spirits and preventing disease. Now they have evolved into narratives with religious and sometimes contemporary themes.In bringing together various art forms from different parts of India, ‘Art of the Tribal Folk’ aims to preserve not only the traditions of such art forms but also the plurality of Indian culture. Followers of Sai Baba and Shankaracharya entered into clash in Chhattisgarh

Kawardha, Aug 26 (ANI): Devotees of Shirdi Sai Baba and followers of revered Hindu cleric Shankaracharya Swaroopananda Saraswati clashed during 'dharma sansad' (Religious Parliament) in Kawardha city of Chhattisgarh. The scuffle broke out when two Sai devotees, who had come to express their views on Sai Baba debate, questioned Shankaracharya which upset his disciples. Later, Shankarachrya intervened to pacify them and the police had to deploy extra force to prevent any untoward incident. Another Hindu Cleric, Narendra Giri, threatened to dismantle Sai statutes.
