AMU VC refutes any sexist remark, says University do not differentiate between girls and boys

Lucknow, Nov 11 (ANI): Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah on Tuesday refuted any sexist remark by him. He said that his statement has been sensationalized by the media and that he only meant to say that the University library had no space to accommodate any more students. Shah said that all the university books are available to all the students online and there is no need to come to already packed library. Secondly, he also said that the passage to the library is also not safe for students. He clarified that the University do not differentiate between boys and girls and this is done to give a bad name to AMU. Nov 11, 2014

Suicide bomber kills 48 students in Nigeria

Nigeria, Nov 11 (ANI): A suicide bomber dressed as a student killed at least 48 people, most of them students, and injured 79 others at a school assembly in the northeastern Nigerian town of Potiskum. No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack in Yobe State, a territory close to the stronghold of Sunni Muslim Boko Haram militants, who have staged a five-year insurgency. Angry locals had blocked access to the school and an adjoining hospital, preventing security forces from getting close to the site of the explosion. Boko Haram has intensified its attacks since the Nigerian government announced a ceasefire agreement last month as well as the imminent release of more than 200 school girls kidnapped by the group. Boko Haram's leader denied a ceasefire deal had been reached and the school girls have not been set free. Nov 11, 2014

University's vice chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah has rejected the demand of students of Women's College for access to the organization's Maulana Azad Library. He said that if girls were permitted in, there would be "four times more boys" in the library. In a bid to justify his order, the VC said that the issue is not of discipline, but of space as the library is packed. Nov 11, 2014

Women's rights activists condemn AMU VC's 'girls will attract boys in University library' statement

New Delhi, Nov 11 (ANI): Women's rights activists on Tuesday condemned Aligarh Muslim University Vice-Chancellor Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah's statement wherein he said that there would be 'four times more boys' in the library if girls were allowed in and that the space does not allow the same. Justifying as to why girls were not allowed library membership, the VC said, “the issue is not of discipline, but of space. Our library is packed". DCW Chairperson Barkha Shukla Singh said that this is the mentality of the University to dominate women. AIDWA General Secretary Jagmati Sangwan demanded that the President should take action over the matter. Meanwhile, NCW Member Shamina Shafiq said that such a statement is not expected from VC of a central university and that space problem should be tackled in a better and positive way. Nov 11, 2014
