India eyes extremist groups as threat to Afghanistan's 2014 polls

New Delhi, Jan 18 (ANI): India said that extremist groups trying to deter domestic stability and internal security of Afghanistan are a key threat to the war-torn country's 2014 presidential polls scheduled for April, as the US plans a total pull-out of combat forces by this year end in absence of bilateral security agreement. India's foreign secretary, Sujatha Singh, expressed such views at the meeting of special officers from neighbouring countries of Afghanistan and other international agencies to discuss on 'Istanbul process' in New Delhi. Appreciating the efforts of Afghan President, Hamid Karzai, towards conducting the polls, Singh said the extremist groups could pose a threat to the elections. Seoul, New Delhi share concerns on North Korea's nuclear agenda, urge compliance

New Delhi, Jan 16 (ANI): South Korean President Park Geun-Hye said on Thursday, India shared its concerns on North Korea's ambitious nuclear weapon programme and urged its neighbour to comply with international obligations on the nuclear front. Park arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for an official four-day visit that would conclude on January 18. South Korea's first woman President held delegation level talks with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and discussed bilateral, regional and global issues. Park's ongoing visit to India also seems to have pushed forward the much embattled POSCO project that has been hobbled by delays in getting clearances, acquiring land and obtaining an iron ore mining licence. India, Maldives agree to boost cooperation in maritime security, vow to foster relations

New Delhi, Jan 2 (ANI): India and Maldives on Thursday agreed on a roadmap to boost cooperation in maritime security along the Indian Ocean, following a delegation-level meet between visiting President, Yameen Abdul Gayoom and Indian Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, in New Delhi. President Gayoom is on a four-day trip to India, which ends on January 04. India hopes for early resolution of legal tussle of GMR group with Maldivian government

New Delhi, Jan 1 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs has hoped for a resolution of issues between infrastructure firm, GMR and Maldivian government, with both at loggerheads over the Male airport issue. The new President of Maldives Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom would visit India from January 01 to 04. President Gayoom would be accompanied by a high level delegation. GMR, a subsidiary of Bangalore-based GMR Infrastructure limited has been given seven days to leave the Indian Ocean island chain. In 2012, Maldives cancelled its biggest foreign investment project, a $511 million deal with Indian firm GMR Group to develop its international airport, raising questions over the future of foreign investment in the islands renowned for luxury resorts. MEA spokesperson, Syed Akbaruddin said that it was important for both GMR and the government of Maldives to resolve their issues.
