Workers protest against nationwide strike call by Bangladesh Nationalist Party

Dhaka, Jan 22 (ANI): Workers of Bangladesh's garment industry and transport department on Thursday protested against the 48-hour nationwide strike call given by opposition, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), in Dhaka. Shouting slogans against BNP, the workers condemned the countrywide strike. Angry protestors demonstrated outside the office of BNP president and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia. The BNP also enforced a nationwide transport blockade which entered its third consecutive week. The political unrest began on January 05 when BNP boycotted election anniversary. The BNP and its allies had boycotted the election that was held in January 05, 2014 which was marred by deadly unrest. Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina held to her stance that a fresh poll can be called only if her rivals halt violence. Jadav Payeng develops 1,400 acres of forest area in Assam

Assam, Jan 22 (ANI): Situated along the Brahmaputra River, Jorhat district of Assam is home to the largest river island on earth, Majuli. Located along with a number of barren sandbars, the area was once heavily eroded due to frequent floods. However, with the individual effort of Jadav Payeng, there is now 1,400 acres of lush forest in the area. Since 1979, Payeng has been single-handedly planting and nurturing various species of trees, including vast expanses of bamboo groves. The vast forest is now home to a variety of wildlife species including the endangered Royal Bengal Tiger and a number of migratory birds. Payeng lives in a small hut in the forest along with his family and survives by selling milk. His work has received much appreciation across the country and he was named as the 'Forest Man of India' by the Jawaharlal Nehru University. Manjhi visits clash-hit village, assures action

Muzaffarpur, Jan 21 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi visited a village in Muzaffarpur district on Wednesday and took stock of the situation after communal violence claimed three lives and charred several houses recently. The clash erupted in Azizpur village after a Muslim girl eloped with a Hindu boy from a neighboring village, Bahilwara Mali Tola. On Sunday, body of the boy, who was missing from the past ten days, was found from an agricultural field. After the body was recovered, angry mob rushed to Azizpur village and set houses on fire. School student killed in accident in Ranchi, angry mob burns buses

Ranchi, Jan 21 (ANI): A mob, angry at the death of a school student, burnt vehicles in Ranchi on Wednesday. A student of fourth standard was run over in a road accident when a bus and a car were trying to overtake each other. The student died on the spot. However, it is not clear if the student was hit by the bus or the car. Angry people spilled onto the roads, set two buses on fire and blocked traffic to protest against the student's death. In order to clear the road, the police had to chase away the angry mob. An eyewitness, Rakesh Kumar, said the mob could only be controlled once the police teams arrived on the scene. Meanwhile, another eyewitness, Pushpesh Yadav, confirmed the student died on the spot. School students too came out to protest against this accident and shouted slogans demanding justice for the deceased student. Jan 21, 2015
