Politicos hail SCs decision to put on hold Rajiv Gandhi killers release

New Delhi, Feb 20 (ANI): Political leaders on Thursday welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to put on hold Rajiv Gandhi killer’s release. The Apex court has restrained the Tamil Nadu government from releasing three convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. The Tamil Nadu government has been asked to maintain status quo till further orders. The Central Government on Thursday moved to the Supreme Court asking a stay on the Tamil Nadu Government's decision to release all the convicted assassinators of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The government has contended that the Tamil Nadu government cannot release the convicts since their case was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which is a central agency, and hence the state has to consult the centre. Centre has also asked the SC to review its order commuting death sentences of three men to life in prison. Feb 20, 2014

Politicos on SC's verdict on Rajiv Gandhi's killers

New Delhi, Feb 18 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Tuesday commuted the death sentence of three men convicted of killing former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi to life in prison. The convicts, Santhan, Murugan and Perarivalan, had petitioned against their death sentence, arguing that there had been an exceptional delay in a decision on their mercy plea. A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam delivered the judgement on the mercy plea. The Centre had earlier opposed the plea by arguing that the convicts did not go through torture, agony and dehumanizing experience during pendency of the mercy pleas. The verdict drew mixed reaction from poltical leaders. Feb 18, 2014
