Chennai, Nov 05 (ANI): Protesters, on Wednesday (November 05), took to streets in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu against death penalty given to Indian fishermen in Sri Lanka. Five Indian fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in 2011 on charges of smuggling drugs and on October 30, the Colombo High Court held the five fishermen guilty of drug trafficking. The arrest of the Indian fishermen by the Sri Lankan navy has been a major topic of debate between the two nations. Former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa, earlier, wrote several letters to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and present Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking to pressurise Sri Lankan authorities to free fishermen detained in the country. BSF guns down smugglers, recovers 22 kilograms of heroin in Punjab

Amritsar, Nov 03 (ANI): India's paramilitary Border Security Force (BSF) troopers gunned down smugglers and recovered 22 kilograms of heroin worth 1.1 billion rupees along the Indo-Pak border in Punjab. Giving details of the incident, BSF Inspector General Ashok Kumar said that one smuggler was shot dead while two of his accomplices were injured and 22 kg of heroin was seized from them at Dera Baba Nanak sector in Gurdaspur district. He added that the operation was launched on the basis of intelligence inputs, following which the patrolling party of 38 Battalion in Gurdaspur observed some suspicious movement in the area of Bohar Wadala border outpost. The patrolling party opened fire in retaliation as the smugglers, who were trying to cross over to the Pakistan side, challenged them. Three smugglers Tasveer Singh, Balwinder Singh and Fateh Singh , all residents of Kalanaur town in Haryana, received injuries. Nov 3, 2014

Mann Ki Baat: PM Modi addresses nation via AIR

New Delhi, Nov 2 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the nation on All India Radio. The programme, which is Modi's second address on radio, named Mann Ki Baat was aired from 11 am. Modi touched upon a range of issues including the cleanliness drive and the black money. PM Modi in his address said, "as far as black money is concerned, trust me that we will work to bring every single rupee back." "I will leave no stone unturned to bring back black money," he added. Talking about the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' he said that more and more people are becoming conscious about the importance of cleanliness. He also informed that his government is trying to make Kendriya Vidyalayas and some government institutions disable friendly. A fund is being allocated for that. Chennai/ New Delhi, Nov 01 (ANI): Members of Communist Party of India (CPI) in Tamil Nadu on Saturday protested death sentence given to five Indian fishermen by a Sri Lanka court, even as foreign ministry promised the concerns have been conveyed to Sri Lankan authorities in New Delhi and Colombo. The slogan-shouting protesters in Chennai city termed Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa a butcher, demanding revocation of the ruling. State General Secretary of CPI, D Pandian said it is shocking news and demanded the Indian government take the matter to the United Nations. Pandian also added the Indian government should declare Sri Lanka non-friendly nation.
