Hike tobacco tax to 50%: Harsh Vardhan to states, UTs

New Delhi, July 06 (ANI): In a bid to discourage smoking among youths, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan has written to heads of states and UTs to consider levying a uniform VAT of at least 50 per cent on all tobacco products. He has also urged to develop a tax policy to make tobacco products less affordable over time, according to an official statement. Vardan had earlier written to the Finance Ministry seeking to increase the taxes on cigarettes in June, wherin he had urged Arun Jaitley to increase the price of cigarette by Rs 3.5 per stick irrespective of its length. Weavers & Jewellers keep hope of promising financial plan alive ahead of 2014 budget

Varanasi/Rajkot, July 05 (ANI): Indian weavers and jewellers hoped for a promising financial plan for their respective sectors ahead of budget, which will be presented by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on July 10. The weaving industry in Uttar Pradesh expected modernisation of its power looms so that the country could compete with China in terms of production. However, one of their pressing concerns was the fate of the handloom industry. Weavers expect concessions from Narendra Modi-led government so that they could get fabric at fair prices and the art continues. Jewellers in Rajkot city of Gujarat also have expectations ahead of the announcement of fiscally prudent budget. New Delhi, July 4 (ANI): At the state food ministers' meet on Friday, to discuss measures to check the unreasonable increase in prices of some food items, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said that hoarders are taking advantage of the forecast of below normal monsoon. He stated that during the months of July- December every year, the prices of some food items increase due to hoarding.
